Blue Printing Actions

...apparently a ton of people got butt-hurt by a person with a screen name "I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU" responding in an acerbic manner.

I fear that you may be under the impression that your screenname somehow exempts you from the Forum rules, but it doesn't; like it or not, there are rules for civility here, and those rules apply to all, even those who might think that they do not.

Those members who have offered you a polite caution are doing so respectfully, although they need not caution you at all. Those members who have offered you a polite caution did so because they do care about you. Me, I don't, so there will be caution for you from me.

Good luck with acting the part of an #######.

At the price a stock Rem 700 action sells for these day, you have to wonder if its not simply better value to sell the action, and buy an aftermarket action that has better build quality.

In reality, unless a person is trying to build a copy of a specific military rifle for instance, you are correct. It's easier to just start with a custom action.

Agree with you 100 percent. I love the IGNORE feature which he was instantly added due too his disposition. Unfortunately when members use REPLY WITH QUOTE his comments are unfortunately are out there for the rest of the normal members for reading. Just think his membership date of August 2022 and almost 1600 posts and ZERO TRADER RATING. His opinion on anything means absolutely ZERO, no wait, changed my mind. I DONT CARE ABOUT YOU. By the way , a ton of people today doesnt really amount to much. Think ur opinion is highly over rated. Seen the Clint movie? A LEGEND IN UR OWN MIND> HAHA

The bolt bumps look to do the same as sleeving the bolt.
I have had actions trued but don’t do that anymore as I don’t see the value on the target. Some of my most accurate rifles are full factory setups. I think spending money on the best barrel you can get, getting it chambered and bedded by an experienced gun smith is getting you most of the way there.

Yup, really.

Dont think hes feelin the love. PS theres nothing SUNNY about him. Just join the club and add him to ignore and stop using REPLY WITH QOUTE. His attitude and bad manners will have him seeing pink really quick, as noted by others on here.

Today, many manfs have improved how they make the action and with CNC, even moderately priced stuff, can be machined properly and consistently. The big issues around extraction ie, bolt handle put on wrong, doesn't seem as prevalent. With more and more factory actions going to floating bolt heads, the risk of poor lock up shrinks...and if the action locks up well, there is little issue during the firing phase which can lead to irratic case expansion.

If the pressures are well contained and the combustion chamber stays consistent, tuning with a good barrel will lead to positive results on target.

My most recent factory rifle turned PRS rig has alignment and lock up equal to any custom action... end result is very positive on target with a match barrel and proper handloads.

For many, the allure, prestige and just 'looks better' of a custom action is worth the cost of admission. They are not perfect and some have their own QC issues but they do appeal in their promise of better performance.

I recall kits to fit "Borden bumps" to R700 bolts. The bolt would cycle back and forth freely, but as the bolt closed, it would be firmly cammed into alignment.

I have read that Howa actions are machined very true, and require little or no correction.

I also think that there is no point in working over an action unless it actually needs it.
Keep in mind that removing metal from the locking abutments and locking lugs affects primary extraction. Maybe bolt handle work needs to be part of the job, to optimize operation.
I mentioned putting a R700 receiver on the mandrel and turning the outside true. 700s were heat treated after machining, resulting in a slight banana shape. 40X receivers had machining done after heat treatment to minimize this warping.

Has anyone had their hands on one of the new 700 actions? I wonder if this new variation, made on new machinery, would benefit from reworking. I suspect they are pretty darn good right from the get go.

Mention has been made of the custom precision actions. I wonder if these are made dead on from scratch, or are tuned in final manufacture.

I do happen to have recently purchased a 700 SA. After doing some research and reading I am questioning if the effort and cost of “blueprinting and trueing” or what ever you want to call it will be worth it. I am not shooting competitions but that being said I do like to work on things and make them better. At this point I have decided that I will set it up and check some of the alignment and squareness( being a machinist and not a gunsmith that is how I would describe it….lol) to see how it checks out. If I feel it necessary I will take a lick or skim here and there. Who knows maybe it will check out well. Once I have the time to check it I will post my results. I did come across the “bumps” at the rear and like that idea. I could easily laser weld some material and fit it.

I have a couple of actions I would like to have Blue Printed (Rem 700 and Howa 1500). I was hoping someone can provide a recommmendation for someone in Ontario? I'm willing to ship the actions anywhere in Canada but prefer to drive them to someone in Southern Ontario if possible.

Thanks,
Moro

Hey Moro. I would highly recommend sending your 700 to Calgary shooting center if you're looking to true your action. The work that Alex does to them is amazing, its exactly how a properly trued 700 should feel and feels like a custom action. The bolt just glides and the lock up is extremely crisp. You just have to feel it to get an appreciation for it.
