BNIB SIG716 rifles do they come from factory shot & uncleaned?

I am all for that. I just dont want to know I ended up with a returned product or something that was "tested" or "joy ridden" by a dealer

If you want to know for sure, call up the manufacturer, or email them and ask them how many rounds they put through in their testing process.

It looks like there's carbon buildup and evidence of wear that would certainly pass for 100 rounds, give or take. They could've used dirty ammo, but the wear on the bolt face and lockup looks like it went through more than just a couple of mags.

Either way, this should only bug you if you did indeed find out that this didn't come out of the factory this way. I think you should be entitled to a swap and to let people know who that dealer was. When you pay for a new rifle, you should get a new rifle.

When I got my new 716 it was covered in this black grease. I attributed it to the manufacturing. I do know it was fired from the factory, but not the cause of all the black crud / grease because of the location where some of it was heavy. I have even run the gun dirty and it was no where near as bad as when I received it. Different kind of dirty. Looks normal to me. I love mine, hope you enjoy yours.

Thanks CanXB, that makes me feel a little better. Look at page two it has more pictures, did your bolt face also look the same? also this black stuff, was it thick like grease or thin like oil?

Mine was thick, almost wax-like. The reason I say it was not from firing was because of where there were lots of this wax-like buildup. My 516 patrol had the same stuff on it but not as bad. My 516 PDW was the same. For some reason the 716 was the worst of all three. I probably had twice as many paper towels as you there, LOL. Definitely not oily, more greasy or waxy would be my best description of it. I would be money it was not a return or fired extensively before you got it.

Sorry, forgot to add that my bolt did look like yours. Also notice there really is no wear on the BCG. If firing a piston driven AR were to generate that much carbon then you would notice wear on certain faces, but I think that was mentioned by someone else already. And your unit does look new, to me anyways.

looks normal, factory don't test with expensive match grade ammo, they used whatever is the cheapest they can get their hands on and that usually means dirty ammo.

Thanks for the reply. Mine was pretty oily not greasy, in fact almost dripping. When I put the bolt carrier on the cardboard, it dripped and left a black residue on the cardboard, evident in one of the pictures on page 2. Since this is my first AR, I wasnt sure what to expect however I was surprised by how easy it was to wipe that black stuff off the parts, i.e. by simply placing it on the cardboard it stained it. This from my experience doesnt add up to carbon fouling, so it might be just like you said, factory black grease. I just dont know why mine is so oily as opposed to waxy.

Like I said, your rags look the same as mine did. With the lack of wear I don't think you have anything to worry about. Great guns, enjoy it!

Personally I would be fine with it as long as it functions properly and I was not purchasing it to keep as a un shot collector piece. It could be that it did not pass final quality control and had an issue and was corrected than test shot a few extra rounds to clear qc before leaving the factory.Just my 2 cents--Dieseldog!

Got my answer from MDC: "The rifle you received is brand new from the factory. No person has fired this rifle - other than the factory testing. You have purchased a rifle intended for LE customers; as a result, the test firing is more in-depth than a standard commercial rifle. Unfortuantley, Sig (nor MD Charlton) has the time or facility to clean the firearms before they reach the end user."

Thank you MDC!! I love my rifle even more :)

Did you already scrub the end of the piston? If not, then your rifle was not fired much. The carbon build-up would be on the piston.

The black stuff is some sort of packing/storage grease meant to be removed after delivery to the customer.

The 716 is awesome! Congrats!

Good to hear that! I like hearing that they shot a little more to get reliability and performance down pat before shipping it out.

Have fun with the gun!
