I just tried to "match finish" some new Boyds front & top wood to a WW11 stock and you need to decide if your going for an original 'as built" Garand or a WW11 stock that has been "patina'd" by years of usage & weathering plus years of old soaked in lubing oils and probably a couple lengthy durations of being coated & shipped in a Cosmoline solution that puts its own "signature color" into every wood stock it touches. Thanks for all the info, but i think I need to clarify a few things. This is for a new musurp stock from Boyd's. I.e. a Garand. So I'm trying to stay towards "original" type finishes with less shiney/gloss look.
BLO and tung oil where used on Garands among other military rifle during that time period.
if your wanting the later, your gonna have to spend some time at a good hardware choosing a penetrating wood dye/stain. in my case the WW11 stock was so stained & dried over the years that any oiling would be an un-natural look so I just stained & dried 3 coats until it "sort of matched" as close as I could get...no oil used.
