bolt action 458 socom

Hmmm.....

Take this in .308

Figure out a barrel in .338/35/40 and you are good to go, with a number of detach magazine options

Why would you spend money on a Mossberg rifle? They are crap. The lowest you should every go is building on a Savage action, and you will get a much better result, and it won't suck either.

I think Gate's point was that the Mossberg is already set up to accept AR mags which already work with the .458 SOCOM.

Thanks for your response Jerry; I know OP is interested in a .458 bullet I was just curious about the raptor.

Not so much anymore after reading your post.

What would be the bolt face and mag needed for the bushmaster, would any short action work?

Given that is was designed to work in an AR10, I would suspect any standard SA in 308 with basic steel mags can be made to work... no first hand experience.

Interesting projects guys. Just a quick question and maybe somewhat of a stupid question but in regards to extended AR mags being normally pinned to 5 rounds, is there an exception when it comes to bolt rifles since there are no mag limits to bolts? I highly doubt it but I thought I would ask. I vaguely remember one of the local gun shops telling me that the mags must remain pinned.

Seems to me the .458x2" will give you a lot more platform options and be a more versatile cartridge. Most magnum brass works fine, plenty of it around. Load it to the max and you have a powerhouse close cover rifle, download for deer and plinking. Cast bullets also an option. I have a .416x2" (also known as the 10.6x51) built on a Rem 660, couldn't find a donor magnum version at reasonable cost so had the bolt face opened and a Sako extractor installed. All in with scope, 8lb. 400gr Hornady's at 1800, 300gr. Barnes at 2250. I have a mold for .416 cast but haven't played with them yet.

Hey BB, I will just throw in another vote for the 458X2", you have several action options, Ruger short, Win short, Rem short magnum.............and brass is virtually free as any belted case can be cut off and used. There just is no downside to the 458X2", also using belted cases you know you're getting a strong positive headspacing case to start with. I built a 375-350 RM on a short Ruger action and it exceeded all my expectations, I would do the same in 416 or 458 and the outcome will be beyond what you may believe.
The other option I would seriously consider would be a 458 WSM, just buy any WSM rifle as a donor, change the barrel and go..........should feed flawlessly and require zero modifications to be 100% functional. Put an 18" barrel on and use the case to bore efficiency and I think you'd be surprised at what you'd end up with.

Brybenn, yes, the reamer was made by PT&G and the dies by CH4D. As C-fbmi says, the result did surpass my expectations in performance and the rifle is such a tidy package to carry. I think a .458x2" might be next. The SOCOM version does have a cool factor but with a lot of extra fuss and not many decent platform options.

Ok. Think I'm sold on the 2" case. I love the 458 diameter it and the 257 are by far my favs. I'll eventually find a decent donor and start another project for this fall.

The .458 x2 American was the father of the .450 Marllin with the belt moved so no cut off easily available mag cases could be chambered to be lawyer proof.................a proprietary case so brass can be a problem...unlike the .458x2.......Harold

I haven't quite got the ball rolling on this project yet. I decided I needed a collection of restricted so my attention has been diverted temporarily.
I'm going either 2" or as Doug suggested the wsm case but I might do a 40 on that instead

Apparently Win 94 Big Bores feed the .458x2" just fine ? Not sure of the work involved other than a new barrel? So with a SA ,the bolt face would need opening up on say a .243 or .308 like a Rem 700 ? Harold

I looked into the lever gun but I want to use any bullet I want so planned on a bolt from the start. I'm planning on using a savage for the convenience of swapping barrels
