Thanks to the watchfull eye of the ever vigilant Yoteboy I'm now the proud owner of four, yes four, brand new propane powered PEET boot dryers for more or less the price of one. I don't see why they wouldn't work, but I'll fire one of them up today.

This is the most effective method. I always carry additional footwear. If you have boots with insulated liners, always buy 2 or 3 spare sets of liners at the same time you buy the boots. Wet liners can dry during the day while you use a fresh dry pair.
I have used the chemical handwarmer products that come in the plastic pouch. Activate and place inside the boot. Put some balled up newspaper or cloth on top to trap the moisture that the heat brings out of the insulation. Keep an eye on it. I don't think it can get hot enough to damage anything but i can't say it's not possible.
Boots with pull-out inserts are easier to dry. Have a set of "camp shoes" so you don't need to wear your hunting boots in camp, this gives them more chance to dry out. Changing your socks frequently also helps to keep boots dryer.
