Bored with my .30/06, what to do? - Becoming a Super .30

I have an older Sako L61R in .30/06. It's deadly accurate and I've put a lot of work into refinishing the stock...but it's a .30/06, so it's boring. Real boring. The bluing is pretty ugly (more grey than blue) and the stock is Bubba'd enough that selling it wouldn't really be worth it.

I don't want to get into rebarreling, so I'm wondering what my (somewhat reasonable) options would be for rechambering. I've heard of a lot of .30/06s being reamed out to .308 Norma and that interests me (increased performance and let's be honest, some cool factor). It sounds like it would be a rechamber job and likely feed rails and extractor work. Any other ideas?

I'm sure the best idea is to just leave it alone, but I haven't carried it at all in the past 2 1/2 years because it's a .30/06...and it's boring.

Thanks guys,

Cory

Please don't do it. I can't understand how someone would get bord of the cartridge that you can get the most bullets, and use the most powders with in the world.

Well, I have a hard time finding the 30-06 "boring" [at present I have only 3]
I also own rifles in about 8 other 30 calibre persuasions, and like 'em all!

But the 300 H&H is a good choice with your rifle, due to the length of the action.

Ballistically, you will have 300 WSM ballistics, which should be just fine.
The "30 Super" marking is a nice touch.

No one mentioned it, but in a pinch, 300 H&H brass can be made from 375 H&H quite easily.

Enjoy your "new" Sako, lol.
Cheers, dave.

This years result from my Super 30. It loves 72.1 gr. of IMR 4350 behind 150 gr. NAB'S. When I was searching for brass I settled on Nosler Custom and quite satisfied with it's performance so far. Norma brass was my first choice but decided to give Nosler a chance first, however the only downfall it that it's very expensive. The Super 30 is a grand old classic cartridge and you won't regret owning one.

I was asked by a couple people what was going on with my rifle, so I'd update this thread.

I have the gun back, and it had some issues (as shown below and a few months longer than was initially told), but it's going to hunt this fall.

This is the stamping that was done (and the 30-06 stamping wasn't removed or crossed out)

And it had feeding issues

It kind of works after a bit of fiddling

I'm not going to name the shop who did the work (if you know who did it, please don't mention them, I don't want this thread to turn into a flame war), I've seen them do other work that was fine, I guess I just caught them at a bad time.

Needless to say, I'm not particularly pleased with what was done, but it is what it is. This wasn't meant as a slagging post or anything, I just thought I'd share my rifle as some people were asking me about it.

That's disappointing. Nothing like having your dream turn to nightmare. On the plus side of it bugs you enough, you will have an excuse to rebarrel it to something new again.

W O R S T. G U N S M I T H I N G. E V E R.

Please name the outfit that did that, really though, as I don't want ANYTHING I own to go to them. You cannot "Unring the bell" , and once a gun is altered in such a way, they can't take it back. Please name them. I have 3 rifles I am going to be sending out in the next 6 months to various gunsmiths, and now I am very concerned....................

In my opinion a business or company is only as good as their latest product . . I want to know the latest report on this company . I couldn't imagine putting that gun into a box and sending it back to a person

Hopefully the owner of the shop that sent that out was unaware, and will offer to make it right (ie: rebarrel at their cost). It is possible that the gunsmith/lawnmower sharpener who did that is a new apprentice or something...

At any rate, I would certainly contact the boss and send pictures for him to see.

When I talked to him about it, he said they could fix the "Holland Super 30" stamping (I don't know how?) and remove the 30-06 stamping. He also said he had tested fired the rifle twice and he didn't have any feeding issues, so he couldn't explain it to me (if you watch the video, I'm not sure how he could've had one feed from the magazine).

For the shipping back to them (it cost me over $50 to get it there with insurance the first time), I was told that I would have to initially cover the shipping cost, but then they would reimburse me with store credit, which I didn't think was acceptable, so I just dropped it with them.

I've bought a couple things from them before, and shipping costs always seemed high to me, but again, lots of other people seem to have good luck with them.
