Bought a 1905 Ross today

Great photos! Looks like a P14 or M17 back sight on there. You should be able to find a Canada Tool & Specialty Co. on eBay.

Winchester30-30 you probably noticed your foresight base is reversed? And so is the base on your new rifle Hal O'Peridol.

Makes you wonder if that was done for a reason doesn't it?

That Humphrey's sight base is the first model made for the 1905 action. Made in Vancouver too.

That "HFN" is an interesting mark. Probably a retailer, but could be the owner's stamp as well.

Original blue on both rifles I'd say. Looks like those handguards were taken off and just mislaid not so long ago. Might be worth asking if the previous owner has them. Things like that get mislaid in estate sales especially.

Very nice rifles.

I have one similar to yours. Has to be my favorite Ross.

Mine has no rear barrel sight, Humphrey`s bridge with BSA Martin sight.

I`ve seen a couple other Rosses with the front sight on backwards, including a MK III I got a while back.
I think it`s just dopes that don`t know any better.

i did notice, those pics were taken before i turned it around!

You can see those forend caps were originally made for the so-called "buggy whip" barrels; notice how the shoulder on them doesn't match the center line of the barrel or the edge of the forend.

Whoever turned the foresight base around went to the trouble to put the blade in the right way, so perhaps there was a reason. My guess would be to stop light reflecting off the slope on the base. We have black tape for that now.

If your rifle has no proof marks, it was probably either assembled from parts after the factory closed or else a "lunch box special". I believe it is mentioned in The Ross Rifle Story that rifles were assembled from parts by at least one gunsmith in Quebec City as far as the 1930s. But you never know and that doesn't detract from it in any way in my opinion.

Looks like you need the short machined sight base without the charger guide.

It is a P-14 sight I put on that sight bridge.......The rifle came with a long range BSA-Martin rear sight, but minimum distance was 500 yds. I put the P-14 sight on it to shoot at 100-200 yds on my local range.

The stocks are normal length......the barrel is at 30.5 inches on both.
