I compared a Leupold VX-1 to a Zeiss Conquest, both 3200 and 4200 Bushnell elites and a Burris Fullfield. I ended up with a VX-1, as the optics seemed far superiour to any of the others. I was humming and hawing over the Burris, which I thought was always made in the US. Suprise, made in the Phillipines. I wonder how long until Leupold starts contracting overseas?
Bought my new scope. But I'm dissapointed.

Are you dissapointed of the scope quality or where it's made? Many years ago cars and electronics made in Japan were considered to be of inferior quality too...

So what are you disappointed with? Sounds like you found a scope that works for you, the new VX-1 is the same as the older Vari-X II. Not what I would have picked, but it has nothing to do with me...

For $200 more for both the Zeiss and the 4200, they didn't compare side by side. It was dark, so comparing them outside wasn't an option. Rather I was picking target areas about 50 yards away in the store. First off, I didn't like the 4200's eye relief. I prefer to keep the scope as far foward as possible. As for the Zeiss, I found it to be heavier than any of the other scopes. Glass wise, the Leupold did better when I studied details. Packaging and the building itself were all I had to look at. The VX-1 had a brighter image than any of the others. I liked that. It appeared sharper to me as well. I was hoping to mount the Zeiss on my rifle when I learned they came down in price from what they used to be. I wanted to keep it "European" just because, but I simply found the Leupold to treat my eye the best.
I like the scope, but I only meant I'm dissapointed that more products are being constructed by foriegn markets. Big companies will profit from it, but what happened to the employee's who used to build their scopes.
I'm sorry, I know nothing of their rangefinders. I've yet to use one while hunting, but maybe one day. Where those are made, I'll assume you know, but their scopes as I understand it are still made in the USA.
That's my understanding as well. At the very least Leupold buys their glass from off shore firms.
Actually I read awhile ago that 'the powers that be' had ruled Leupold can no longer put 'MADE IN THE USA' on they products they have been. Can anyone confirm this?
I think that the others are better glass, but a scope is a sight first and that is where the leupold is superior.

My only non leupold scope is a philippines burris. I can not knock the clarity. I have not mounted it yet so the jury is still out. I did a search on CGN and did not find anyone had anything bad to say about it. My only complaint is that in Canada the 3-9 cost over $300.00, and for that price I would buy a leupold VX1 cause I know how good they are. Can tire sold a bunch of p made burris for $250.00. I paid 200.00 for mine in a private deal, but there are many that get them cheaper. I am going to pick up a cheap tikka and give the cheap combo a try when the weather warms.
