Bought my son his first gun... CZ

I was wondering how the gun nutz feel about CZ rimfire rifles. My son turns 12 in 2 weeks. He has been shooting my 10/22 since he was 8. He will be taking the course for his minors license in January and so I decided to buy him his own gun. After much research & advise, I settled on this:

CZ 455 LUX in .22LR Walnut Stock.

I think I made a good choice as my criteria was as follows:

1) Good quality & workmanship so it lasts until he passes the tourch to his son.
2) Iron sites so he can familiarize himself with correct shooting techniques before scoping it.
3) Great Accuracy
4) Up to date technology
5) Smooth bolt movement & nice trigger

I haven't tried it yet as it is for his birthday and I want him to shoot it first. What is the experience with these guns? Was this a good choice?

That .rifle is an excellent piece for his first .22 - it'll stay with him for life...:)

My full stock is the most accurate 22 I own, and mine came with a dandy piece of Walnut. The more expensive the ammo you feed it, the tighter the one hole is. FS

I personally like the full stock but he is a bit small and will likely struggle with the weight as it stands. I was concerned that the full stock is heavier. :)

You made an excellent choice. That gun will last many generations and countless rounds of ammunition. The stock looks beautiful, and CZ makes amazing firearms in my experience.

My father gave me a Cooey 64 when I was a kid, I still have it and I still shoot it and I have used it to teach many people how to shoot since.
 
Good solid guns from all I have seen. You must feel like a kid again! You prob are looking forward to his Birthday more than he is! LOL! Take lots of pics of that day! He will be able to have the gun, and pics of he and dad with the gun later on in life! Cheers!
 
Excellent gun. Good choice, AWOL. I have the CZ American and love it. Very accurate. My first 22 was a brand new $6.00 Coey 39, bought with my paper boy money in '62! Happy shoot'en with your son.
 
Your son is lucky to have a dad like you! I just bought my first CZ, a 452 Varmint in .17 HMR and wow...I'm impressed with mine. I sold my Savage HMR, added a small heap of cash, and moved-up to the CZ and I'm glad I did. The Savage was a shooter, but it was impossible NOT to pick a CZ over a Savage when you see them side by side.

same here! i had the 9317bvtss and i sold it to buy the 452 american varmit in 17. i bought it to pass down to my kids!

I thought of that but he has been shooting my 10/22 with optics for 4 years. I really want him to be competent with open sights. That is why I deliberately got this model over others that are "scope only". I have a spare scope to throw on if he wants to mess about once in a while but for the range & target shooting over the next few months, he will primarily use open sights. I can get him a nice scope after I'm comfortable with his performance.

Great rifle! I bought my 6yrold a Cooey 600 and he loves it (under VERY close supervision, of course - poor boy doesn't have the strength to close the short-draw bolt yet :)
 
Very nice gun and he's going to love it forever. I really like CZ's

My first gun given to me by my father at age 12 was a Cooey 600 and I still have it and use it.

My 10 yr. old son is excited about me passing it on to him. In the mean time he's getting a Mossy tactical .22 tomorrow for his BD.
 
CZ452 shoots very well with open sights (good for first gun). However, if you look at the curvature of the heel, the moment you scope it then cheek weld become an issue. It also has a high bolt lift which requires high rings and exacerbates the problem. There is one in stock at the Langley WSS with amazing wood (more so than my two in the photo).

If there is a high likelihood that the rifle will never be sold (as first rifle), then may want to consider the 453 model with fully adjustable trigger & set trigger and stock better suited to a scope (notice it is a flat and perpendicular to barrel so not matter if face a little further forward/back - same plane with scope). Depending on model may not have open sights though.

+1 on YoDave kit if 452.
