Well, I've got no future as loader at an English drive grouse shoot either, but I might be able to give you some tips on reloading the double. It would take 2 seconds to demonstrate, but half a page to explain, so hopefully the pics will be self explanatory.
Hook 2 spares under the middle finger of your left hand, if you're a right-handed shooter. When you open the gun, keep it in your right hand and reload with the left.
I didn't have any flanged .375 so I had to make do with a couple of belted rimless.
When you go to reload, pivot your last two fingers around to the other side.
You're now gripping them with your thumb and last 3 fingers, which gives you good control. You should be able to drop both into the open breach simultaneously. With a bit of practice, I bet you could have two in the chambers before the empties hit the ground.
This technique doesn't work as well with shotguns, the rounds are too square.
The same sequence again with a couple of .465 cartridges. This is not a comfortable way to carry spare ammo. And the fatter the rounds, the less comfortable it is.
And for heaven's sake, don't be like those guys on boobtube, standing around with an empty rifle while trying to fish spare rounds out of belt loops. Get them out ahead of time if you think you might need them. Can't help you with the No. 1, like I said, I'm a Mauser guy.
