A buddy of mine just bought a new in the box, un opened, Mossberg 500 3 barrel, (yesterday) that is full of RUST. He brought it to me to take it apart, clean, and lube it. Inside all 3 barrels RUST. The shell chamber RUST, the chamber screws that hold s the barrels in RUST. The female nut for those screws RUST. Even the small metal piece on the safety, inside the action RUST. I know it isn't an expensive gun, but this is totally unacceptable. The trigger assembly and the firing pin assembly were filled with enough CRAP grease to grease 4 guns completely, that had to be removed or it probably wouldn't even shoot.

This is just a warning, before you buy one of these take a close look.

FLHTCUI I am not sure that he meant he would avoid P&D, I think he meant he would avoid Mossberg. This is not P&Ds fault. The gun was enclosed in a box, and none of the rust would be noticeable without a close look. Mossberg, did a horrible job of prepping this gun, and I suspect others are the same. Poor controls are normally not limited to one item.

I mentioned where I bought it, because i was asked, and Edmonton is not known for salt air.

Were there no silica gel packs in the box?

Moral of the story - he should have bought an 870 variant. Along with the top-tier of the 700's, they are the last good product Remington makes.

Calm down everyone. I'm bias, I know. I prefer the 870 over the 500/590 guns. Yes, I know, not all of them come rusty.

P&D is a good outfit. They will look after you. That gun should go back to the distributor.

If you had bought it at certain other dealers, they would make you send it in for warranty and wait forever for the warranty centre to fix a defective product. Caveat Emptor.

DISCLAIMER: This is all based on what you have written. Photographs would help. I'm assuming we are talking about serious corrosion here.

Why is the stores fault?
Was this a mail order item?
Slagging a store with little evidence is poor form.
BTW they are a site sponsor and well regarded in the circle.
I have no dog in this quote or the opening thread, but there is way more to the story.
Cool Thread I agree diligaf!

Concur. The best way to deal with this mail s offline. Venting is OK but nobnames without proof of wrong doing

Will try to load pics. I think most of the rust can be removed, but hours of work to get it. Some of it is deep. There is more than I first thought. PD may or may not take it back. i think they are a good outfit, but I have heard others, including the guy who bought this 500, state that they wouldn't get involved in other problem firearms returns, which if true is not good on them. We will see.

fraserdw, just to make the record straight, as mentioned by me previously. This is not P&ds fault. I posted to make others aware, of possible problems with these shotguns.

P&D is a great store and ive bought lots from them. I dont think they should be blamed for a gun being rusty. Most stores only open the box long enough to make sure the proper gun is in the box. I am sure they will quickly fix this issue for you. It is the buyers resposibility to make sure everything is the way he wants it. I never leave a store without pulling the gun out and making sure everything looks right. In the case of a online sale first thing i do is un package and check for rust. Do to shipping in the winter i have returned guns before due to rust.

ripitup911 3rd and last time, I did not say this was P&Ds fault, and I don't think the other guy who mentioned he would avoid was speaking about P&D.

Rather than the buyer it is the manufacturers responsibility to make sure that their product is properly prepped, and packaged. I just bought a toaster, and didn't tear it open at the store, to check for rust, or other faults. Come to think of it, I also bought a socket set recently, and didn't tear that open at the store either.
