Brand New to Canada: SG-12 "SPAS"

With the hook it seems like it could be quite manageable to shoot from the hip one handed.

If you were holding a shield with one arm, and the SPAS with the other, I could score a hit. Not sure I’d want that 21” barrel waiving around for someone to grab in a riot situation.
I don't think I'd want to be in a riot and rely on a turkish shotgun to save my life ;)

From TI’s product listing;

Improved reliability – Retains the solid gas-piston operating system while addressing key weaknesses of the original SPAS-12, including the loading mechanism, buffer, and sling attachment

So I’d assume the sling attachment should be good to go otherwise the weakness wouldn’t have been ‘addressed’..

Though I’ve been known to be wrong on more than one occasion..
the rear sling loop being in that spot is pretty goofy anyway, the split ring that holds the folding stock bolt would serve that purpose better

Tried my SP-12 today.

Gun was disassembled, inspected, and reassembled without the magazine tube spring retainer to have 6 2.75" shells in the tube as advertised in the Tactical imports page. A longer spring was added to ensure proper feeding, as factory spring was barely the length of the mag tube + extension. New spring was approximately 2.25x the length of the magazine tube with the extension.

No extra cleaning or lubrication.

Put about 75 shells of mixed Score buckshot and slugs through it. Issues found:

- Experience double feeds every single time the gun was fully loaded, with less double feeds as the gun emptied.

- Occasional failures to feed, hull ejected from chamber but next shell hung up halfway out of magtube. Disassembled at the range with no apparent cause for issues.

- Pump mechanism was engaged. First shot in pump mode caused the action to seize shut. Had to mortar the charging handle to eject spent hull. Rest of pump mode shot ejected correctly, while still experiencing double feeds and failures to feed.

- The two screws that attach the heatshield to the barrel had come loose. Heatshield could move 3-4 mm front and back on the barrel.

- Choke quickly got loose, no wrench provided to tighten so it was removed for the duration of the tests. Choke attaches externally to the barrel which has external threads, so no damage was done while shooting the gun with the choke removed.

There were glaring issues out of the box as well. Some potentially so significant I can't talk about them.

- Gun is so tight out of the box, the bolt release cannot be used with one finger. Both hands needed to be gripping the receiver tightly, and then the bolt release button had to be pressed with significant force to get the action to close from the locked open position. Working the action is helping to loosen up the button, but it is still significantly tight.

- In the folded position, the stock latch was locked into the rear sight so tight, stock had to be removed from the receiver to release. A rubber guard was pressed into the stock, tensioning the entire stock against the receiver. It has been removed, and the latch can be operated freely now.

- The mechanism for switching between pump and semi was insanely tight. The instructions literally say to "wiggle the forend to help the switch". Wiggling did not help. Applying oil to the mechanism and the forend track did.

- The doublefeed was being caused by the aluminum follower, which was binding up in the magtube. Replaced it with a basic plastic orange 870 follower and issues went away.

- Heatshield is attached to the barrel with two crappy screws. They came loose, and heatshield rattles. Had to apply loctite, and retorque them.

Another shoot is planned for later this week.
Hey do you remember what you torqued them to?

Seen something earlier today about the magazine extension not being permanently pinned to 5 rounds on these semi shotguns and they can be very easily removed because it just long bolt that's not welded in? is this the case for the ones that TI is bringing in and if so are they being taken care of ?

That would be one tough thing to explain if someone was found with this without knowing.

Also looks like the post was taken down cant seem to see it any where.

Any chance the trigger guard could be reworked in future versions to more closely match the shape of the original? That's one of the aesthetics of the original spas12 that always appealed. The current trigger guard just looks.... wrong to me; doesn't match the rest of the gun.

Seems to be a one-off, we tried removing the blockers on a few different mag extensions with gunmsith punches and they weren't coming off...

Try a 1/4" bit and a socket wrench. The limiter is threaded into the extension's cap. And the cap is threaded into the extension.
So I just want to understand, because you’ve been on about this for some time today.

You took some tools and purposefully committed an indictable offence by defeating a capacity limiting device (much like drilling the rivets out of magazines) and are now confessing to committing that offence online?

Have you been drinking today?

THE TERMINATOR - Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) Franchi SPAS-12 ...

Arnold shot it one-handed, with the stock completely removed.
Arnold shooting this shotgun one handed was likely the deciding factor for the Liberals to prohibit this thing in the first place. Because, Science...

Rivets are considered a permanent modification because they require a tool to be removed.

The rod and cap in the extension both were loose after firing the shotgun with 1300+ FPS high brass slugs and buck, per Tactical Imports direction.

And I'm drinking Toolshed Brewery Golden Hour.

Require tools to be removed ? Correct ?

Used tools. To do such things. Are you ok brother ?

No officer, I did not. I was simply speaking in hypotheticals….🤣😆

Most officers wouldn’t know a Robertson from a Phillips …you be good to go
I bet whatever the culpability of the importer regarding permanence (likely declared to RCMP while providing import sample) it is at worst a compliance adjustment issue.

I am reminded of the retarded liberal reporter from La Presse literally committing a crime on television by using tools to defeat a rivet. Also for notoriety. And then Backpeddling when called on it.

F-Tang: Do you seriously think a judge would accept that it takes more effort to remove the rivet (5 seconds) than a well secured Robertson screw?

Unlike this fellow I don’t believe the reporter was drinking at the time.

Even the most “Bottom of my graduating class” cop would see Mens Rea with photos of the disassembled firearm and a pile of tools around it.

Back in from the bush. Gun was really wet from the rain we had earlier. I was hunting squirrels with my boy on our property. Loaded to capacity with five 2-3/4 #8 high velocity steel birdshot.

Ran like a top. Chucked the hulls maybe 5-6 feet.

I have other semis that will not cycle this ammo.

I should add that I didn’t clean or lubricate the shotgun - too lazy. It’s out of the box.

I found out what the hook was for when my little boy needed both my hands to help move a big branch he wanted to bring home (he’s like a golden retriever that way)
