brass cleaning

Just thought I would throw out a bit of recent experience. I reload a lot for a M1 Garand rifle and AR 15 and someone somewhere suggested that I should throw strips of Bounce cloths into my tumbler to speed up the cleaning process. I have been doing this for about a year but really have not seen much difference in the brass even tho the Bounce strips come out of the tumbler black. So today I decided to experiment and did the same in the tumbler with no brass. The Bounce strips still came out black. Apparently the Bounce strips clean the media but make no difference in the time it takes to clean brass. In my humble opinion the cleaning capability of corn cob media is in the rough edges of the individul kernals and the Bounce strips may clean those kernals but certainly can not restore those rough eges. How am I doing so far? Any comments ? Also would like to discuss the benifits of using small base dies in resizing 30-06 brass for the M1 Garand.

I always love reading these threads there is always a lot of good info you can't find in books. But I'm always waiting for a poster to say;

' Well I've always found that a 1/2doz eggshells, the crumbs from a Toblerone bar and 2 old apple cores work best'

And then wait for someone to try it..

Sorry to go off topic but I was just thinking aloud.

Wouldn't a polish/wax adversely affect the casings ability to grip the chamber upon firing?

I just tumble until the soot's off and they're reasonably clean. Bright brass is for........ People who really like bright brass. ;)

the bounce sheets are there to gather dust from your media and that way you can reuse your media alot more. i just mix some metal polish with my media, after case prep i use ultrasonic to clean the cases inside/out

That's good for the final polish, but I like to substitute peach pits for the apple cores on extra dirty range brass.
I went overboard and used 4 peach pits, thinking "If some is good, more is better!" but after 3/4 hr it let all the smoke out of the wires of my tumbler. Just too much, I guess. Now I just stick to two.
That reminds me, gotta pick up some more Toblerones....

Spend the cash needed to convert to wet tumbling with Stainless Steel Media.
Cleaner brass, never need to buy media ever again, and no dust whatsoever.

Your brass is clean enough for all practical purposes when it comes out of the tumbler. It's entirely up to you how much time you want to waste at that point.

If all you want to do is make you brass clean, I wash my dirty pickup range pistol brass in boiling water with vinegar and soap. Rinse in Baking soda then clean water and bake dry at about 100 ferenhiet or the lowest setting on your stove. If you tumble after that your media is usually always clean and the brass is blindingly shiney. Also the wife loves it when she finds spare brass casings behind the stove or in the kitchen sink randomly :)
