Brass slug shotgun rounds. Opinions?

Do we have any idea what kind of pressures would be generated? I know that is a pretty broad question, but at this point I would be happy to hear any opinions.

Where I get confused is how come a break-action shotgun is rated at around 12000psi, yet you can get a double-rifle built on a break-action, and they are touching off rounds in the 40 000+psi range? Is that because of the barrel thickness, rather than the action type?

There was someone in Ontario who used to convert shotguns into double rifles by sleeving the barrels. He also did do something to re-inforce the locking mechanism however. Unfortunately I don't remember his name, nor what magazine I saw tha article in. So in theory, what you are proposing might be possible.

i nominate you as the official CGN guinea-pig.

im sure many here would chip in for powder/brass/slugs on the condition that you get someone with a camcorder to record the experience.
no pussy strings attached to the trigger though:)

Haha I would be proud to bear the honour of being the CGN guinea pig. But I don't think even I am ballsy enough to proof the load without using the patented "string-and-sandbag" method. At least not the first time.

Of course, once I get this project up and running, you can count on photos and updates, just like with the 375 Taylor.

I ran across the idea of "sleeves" while pursueing this, and that of course got me into full "double rifle" mode, so have starting racking the brains of the guys on the nitroexpress forum too. Stay tuned, as this could get very interesting.

What we need is an enterprising smith who could make a set of rifled little-skeeter type inserts for 20ga or even 45/70 in a 12ga. Full length of course.
Cheers,
Grant

i dont see how it would make much of a difference - it is the chamber that contains the pressure. the shell is just a gasket.

im no expert - hell i dont even reload - but IMO if you are going to experiment with hot loads you might want to try something sturdier than an old SxS to do it in. i dont watch TV very often, but was flipping channels at a friends house a while back and some gun show was trying to blow up a Benelli by firing 12/20 bursts (forcing cone blocked with a 20ga, with a 12ga fired off behind it). even after several attempts the gun was undamaged, and just blew the entire obstructing 20ga. shell right out of the barrel. i dont think that an old spanish SxS would have held up quite so well. it even suprised the guys doing the test - i guess they expected to blow the Benelli apart to show how catastrophic a 12/20 burst can be.

isnt Remington/Spartan importing .30-06 and .45/70 doubles? or are they not in the country yet? i see them on the Remington site under SPR22.

still not here and as far as i understood they were restricted to the low pressure loads and not the marlin or ruger +P loads.

I gather that this has been a bit of a stumbling block as it is foreseable that the +P loads would be used in the rifle and damage the rifle or person.
If it could handle the +P loads it would be a hot seller.
