Hey guys asking for my cousin who doesn't have an account on here, wondering where i would find a scope mount for a Brazilian mauser re-barreled to 30-06, he wants to hunt with it this year, but he wants to put a scope on it. does anyone got any leads as to where to find one?

Any drill and tap mounts for a Mauser 98 will fit, but the gunsmith might have to file off the charger guide to fit the mounts. Some require that, others do not.

If it's all ready rebarreled it makes little difference in value.

Leupold makes a two piece mount for the modern FN Mauser action. The rear charger guide needs to be removed to mount them though. As mentioned, be careful with your drilling. I like to use a centering drill to drill pilot holes. They are far more rigid and won't wander on you. The thing is, they need to be properly sharpened to work properly.

I still wish I had bought that great set of trammels from that old smith at the Kamloops show several years ago. In all honesty, using a center punch to locate the holes can be extremely taxing and I have seen more than one Mauser with holes drilled off the axis of the receiver center.

Google Weaver scope bases. They make a two piece and one piece set of mounts for their standard rings.

Drill and tap for a steel mount not the two piece Weaver aluminum ones. Pay a smith to do the work....the FN mt is not the same as a regular 98 mt....Harold

You're right, it isn't but if you're going to reshape the rear bridge anyway why not go to something that's available and of good quality. I have used those mounts on several rifles and I personally quite like them.

I have also utilized mounts that were never intended for the 98 action but with a little bit of effort and patience it was relatively simple to make up a spacer block to fit snugly under the rear portion of the mount over the rear bridge. As far as the Weaver aluminum bases go I find that is mostly snob appeal which I will admit I succumb to myself. There are millions of two piece as well as one piece aluminum bases in use on just as many firearms that work perfectly well for the job required of them. I have even seen them used on HBR match rifles.

I know they are functional but I have a personal bias against aluminum of any gun or plastic for that matter...........old school..........Harold
