Brobee's 2017 Practical Marksman Challenge

If you do try the challenge and have some photos you'd like to share (which I would LOVE to see!), send me a PM and I'll share my email or txt/msg coordinates so I can host them for you on my server.

Cheers,

Brobee

Will do.
I need the practice i was couped up all fall and winter with a torn Achilles tendon during my last bear hunt.
I'm on midnights next week so I'll have time to play with the rifles I'm taking hunting this year

Hi Folks!

So this past friday I drove up to the farm with my oldest daughter for some centerfire rifle practice in preparation for hunting season. I shot my scoped Tikka T3x Arctic .308win, she shot her Browning X-Bolt Micro Midas .243win. We both ran through the challenge twice...

  • Dad - Run #1: 8 hits w/ 111 seconds, score = 86
  • Dad - Run #2: 9 hits w/ 94 seconds, score = 101
  • Daughter - Run #1: 6 hits w/ 91 seconds, score = 68
  • Daughter - Run #2: 8 hits w/ 99 seconds, score = 88

She was a little embarrassed with her groups and made me promise not to post any closeups of her targets, but agreed that I could take a pic or two to show folks our setting:

For my part, my first round I dropped both the standing shots as I waved the gun all over the place and could not settle into a solid standing position. Then on my second round I found a great natural point of aim for my standing shots and got so excited when I NAILED them that I rushed the first kneeling shot and threw it way high.....AAAARRRRRGGGG!

We had a great time, can't wait to get out to practice some more.

Cheers,

Jason

she does realize that she cleaned your clock with her second run, right? That's something to be proud of given that she's got a couple less years of shooting than you do ;)

Tell your daughter she beat my score from last year!

Gonna give it a try with a lighter caliber and a scope this year and see if I can shave my time down.

I tried it with the LEvergun today, its Model 94 in 375win, Williams peep sights and a 245gr projie.

Because its wet as Down under at the moment I did not do the Prone shootin, or much Kneeling and Sitting.... however I switched the Prone to another Unsupported Standing (hunting situation) and I think another Set of Kneeling unsupported to make up the 10 round Count...

Exact styles were

2 x standing up.
2x kneeling one leg (field position/support off elbow knee)
2x Sit No support
2x Kneeling up no support
Reload
2x Standing again unsupported

100 meters... into a piece of paper with a 8 inch circle on it,

My Results were ummm..... :) pathetic

I had 5 hits on PAPER, and quite a few I shot just above the Paper - could tell as I shot they were guna be high. I think I rushed a Little bit.. total time including a Reload of 3 in the mag was- 1:30 / 90 seconds. but Accuracy TERRIBLE.....

my fault though, ill re do this soon with more chilled out scenario

Would not in any way characterize your results as pathetic as the goal of the challenge is to get folks practicing their shooting in positions other than benched/bagged/proned-out. Thrilled that you gave it a try!

What could be pathetic is my ability to attract/recruit participation for the challenge! Looks like I'm gonna have to noodle on creative ways to try and get folks to give it a shot.

Cheers, and thanks again!

I was planning on going to the range today but it's suppose to be 40 degrees with the humidity.
I only suffer that kind of weather for hunting and well sitting on the couch in the ac lol
Hopefully tomorrow ill have some shooting done
The rifles I plan to use should be interesting

Turns out its pouring rain and severe thunderstorms today. It will have to wait till week after next sorry

Managed to get out last week for some more practice but was unable to run a clean target on the challenge COF:

  • 9 hits for 10 shots fired, 89 seconds
  • 9 hits for 10 shots fired, 101 seconds

The wind was up and gusting a bit, making it difficult to hold the rifle steady for the standing shots. Looks like more practice required for me!

I was also fortunate that my oldest daughter wanted to come along for some range practice in preparation for her upcoming first deer hunting season...we set up some gongs and had a little shootoff. To level the playing field she was allowed to use a rest whereas I had to shoot sitting unsupported. Here she is at 4/4, wondering if she has it in her to make that last shot and shut dad out of the win with 5/5:

We finished off the evening by setting up the 16 inch gong at 100 and practiced our standing snap shooting then a trip to Tim Hortons for a donut....what a GREAT outing!

But alas....now 1 month in with dad/daughter + one brave gunnut seemingly the only participants, Brobee's Summer 2017 Practical Marksman Challenge is looking to shape up more along the lines of the great social-experiment SUPER-FAIL of 2017!

Cheers,

Brobee

This is an excellent test of basic rifle craft. Once I get moved back to Canada and can scope out a suitable location (any suggestions near Edmonchuck?) I will be running at least a couple of my rifles through their paces on this. It looks like a great drill. I'm interested to see the differences in my scores between my 1.5-5X scope (Ruger), 2.5X fixed scope (Steyr), and peep sights (Marlin).

Does anyone else in this group make a habit of practicing "snaps" at 25 or 50 yards? 1.5 second par time from the high ready? It's something that I picked up at Gunsite that I very much enjoyed.

Will be interesting to see the results of any differences between your sighting systems!

I practice snaps quite frequently...but because I like to use steel targets I go for a 16 inch gong at 100 yards...essentially the same sized target as a 4 inch clay at 25 yards. If I want to 100% guarantee a hit I'm about 2 seconds, but when I go for speed to try and make the 1.5 second Cooper threshold I can only muster about a 50% hit rate.

I've been meaning to try this however the loads I was playing with were totally disappointing for my 300 wm. The sst I can't get to group better than 1.5" and the 180 gr woodlieghs ppsn are indistinguishable from the sst in the back stop and water jugs. They completely shed their jackets so ill go back and try accubonds or lighter bullets
My next range trip ill do my 458 time will be slow do to reloading thru th action
