While cleaning my XD40 after the last range trip (ok, ok...after the last 3 range trips :p ), I noticed that the ejector was missing about 5mm's off of the tip. I have NO idea how long it's been like that, but the gun never missed a beat on the range. I suspect that it will continue to function without missing a beat.
However, there is a problem. I can't get a new ejector from anywhere. Springfield will not sell parts to ANYONE, you have to send the pistol to them for repair.
This is very problematic for Canadian XD owners, of course.
I contacted the business that sold the gun to me last week requesting assistance, but have not as of today received a response.
Breaking ejectors on the XD40 models is not uncommon, particularly on earlier models that were the first "rebadged" Springfield models. The cause of the ejector breaking was initially attributed to two reasons:
-People using modified Beretta mags which contacted the ejector on reloads, eventually breaking it.
-Inserting full mags on a reload with too much force, which caused the left mag feed lip to strike the ejector, eventually breaking it.
Closer examination reveals that the top round's rim in a full mag is the part that actually contacts the ejector. This area has been releaved on later model XD40's, so that the cartridge rim does not contact the ejector.
My gun is 3 years old has had approx. 3000 rounds through it.
IMO, Springfield should have issued a recall to repair these earlier guns.
Here's what I'm talking about:-

I can't seem to nail down with anyone when the ejectors were modified, but I'd guess that it would have been about 2 years ago when I first read about them breaking.
My XD40's serial number is: US403###
If yours is prior to that, or within (at a guess) a couple of thousand numerics, I'd inspect your ejector closely for any evidence of contact under the extended tip. ;)

PrairieMedic: Yes, I followed that thread when it was up. I'm going to contact Springfield again in the morning to see what they can do for me. I still haven't heard anything back from the store I bought it from, but I'm sure I will.

six star, as a fellow XD guy. Good post, I will keep an eye out. I'm confident you will get a replacement. I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks SkyTr...oops...Skycrane. :D :p
I wish I knew what actually caused it to break, as I'm not yet persuaded that it was caused by my mags.
Anyhow, I'll be sure to let you know the outcome.

Ok...good news. Putting all my Customer Service skills to work :D ,I've got something going with Springfield Armory that should result in my gun getting fixed without it leaving Canada. :)
I'm a bit disappointed my selling dealer didn't respond to my request for help, but I'm sure they have their reasons.

This issue is largely a FN Sports issue. I had a customer call SA who referred him to FN Sports who then referred him to me (although I didn't sell the gun!). I called FN Sports for the part, but was given the run around. Now almost 2 months later I called FN Sports again and was told, no problem we will order the part for you. Why they can't deal directly with a customer is beyond me, but then again their service bites regardless.

My XD40 is ser#401### and I have over 25,000 round through her. I inspected mine and it is A-OK. I have had mine since 2003 and it is still going great.

So Pop....any thoughts as to what might have caused my XD40's ejector to break? :)
The only mods that I've done to the gun is install a "Don's Guide Rod" with a 22# recoil spring. If anything, the heavier recoil spring should have made things easier for the ejector by slowing down the slide when travelling rearward. I have also been using relatively mild reloads, which would also help to save wear and tear on the ejector, and the gun in general.
When I receive my new ejector, I will inspect the clearance between the top of the mag feed lips and the underside of the ejector while applying pressure to the bottom of the mags. I suspect that's where the problem lies.

It's also beyond me, especially considering that we're in another country! I'm sure that Springfield Armory's other distributors in other countries can order parts for their customers.
Personally, I would consider it good customer service to encourage all dealers selling XD's to help any XD owner with a problem by making parts available to those same dealers, regardless of whether they sold the gun or not.
Even the car business figured THAT one out. ;)
