Browing Hi Power CF Edition

Sourced from a thread at Army.ca....here's a quote from a RKI...

First is the list of requirements that were apparently part of the SOR in 2012-ish.

1. Full Size, DAO Trigger
2. Current NATO Service + 2 years
3. 9mm
4. Magazine >13rds, >15rds is better
5. Unloaded weight + empty magazine must be < 950g
6. Barrel must be 102mm or longer
7. Trigger pull must be between 4-8 lbs
8. Ambidextrous magazine release
9. Must not need to pull the trigger to disassemble
10. No magazine safety
11. No safety devices to manipulate
12. Must have an M 1913 accessory rail
13. Trigger pull weight must be consistent every Shot.

Color me confused but I don't actually see a pistol that meets the criteria anywhere?

Several Federal Entities down here issue Glock's and Smith&Wesson M&P guns - but in either .40S&W or .45ACP.

Hk seems to have the only truly ambo mag release - with their dual lever. But the USP is a brick, and a poor contender to their new designs.

28 NATO Countries use the following

Albania - M9/Beretta 92
Belgium - Hi-Power and FN 5.7
Bulgaria - Sig Pro 2022
Canada - No2 Mk1* (Browning Hi-Power) and Sig P225
Croatia - HS2000 / Springfield XD
Czech Republic - CZ-75
Denmark - Glock 17
Estonia - Hk USP
France - Hk USP and Glock 17
Germany - Hk USP
Greece - Glock 17
Hungary - Hk USP
Iceland - Glock 17
Italy - Beretta
Latvia - Glock 19 and Glock 17
Lithuania - Glock 17
Luxembourg - Mk1 Browning Hi-Power
Netherlands - Glock 17
Norway - Glock 17
Poland - well GROM uses the Hk USP
Portugal - Glock 19 (replaced the Hk USP in 2009)
Romania - appears to still be their version of the Tokarev
Slovakia - appears to still be their version of the Makarov
Slovenia - I cannot locate any info
Spain - Hk USP
Turkey - Zignana C45 - a .45 ACP gun
United Kingdom - BHP and Sig P226
United States - M9 Beretta, Glock 19, and 1911

Okay so the current Browning Hi-Power is out, as is the SigP225.

Leaving the remaining 9mm guns as:

Sig P226R -
Sig P228R -
Sig Pro 2022 -
Glock 17 - squeeze trigger on disassembly
Glock 19 - squeeze trigger on disassembly
HS2000/Springfield XD - pretty poor performance in any US LE entity testing.
Beretta M-9 - Not DOA in issue configuration - and too big/heavy
CZ 75 B - not DOA
CZ PO1 - to small
HK USP – expensive and no 1913 rail

Based on the above I believe that the spec has been written for the Sig Pro 2022 exclusively to justify a sole source award.

^ thats the POS SOR and who ever wrote it should be fired

The worst part is "Must not need to pull the trigger to disassemble" Why? because what is the last step in every CF safety precaution! So why on earth would this matter????

Because some people don't like Glocks.

This thread is the winner!! :dancingbanana:

It has gone from a CF Browning HP commemorative idea,.. to a "Glock versus the universe collection" thread in the least number of posts possible. And it didn't even go through the usual intermediate stage of "1911 versus Glock", "9mm vs 40 vs 45" etc etc,...and the only reason I'm sure for it's shortest number of posts to "Glock versus" ever,.. and of course the Forum winner!

Geez I never knew us :cool:Glock Fanboys:cool: had such a one track mine and such a distracting demeanor to other's.....hehe..........

I'm going to drop into every pistol thread in the future and just post "Get a Glock 17!!!',....cough ..cough.....ah....pardon me,.... what was the question again?

The CF is not looking at replacing the BHP at this time. The SOR was cancelled.
I don't foresee a new one for at least a few years, so don't expect a new pistol before 2020... If the CF drop the requirement that it has to be built by Colt Canada

Back on topic?

I dont see Browning doing a CF edition BHP as the sales would be very limited, But we can ask Inglis Canada to make us a special run of BHPs :p

I would get one if they made a CF edition currently serve and want a Browning HP.... Doubt it will take off though

It might if they didn't charge $1200...
Would be cool to see a deal like the Savage 10TR .308
If we could at least get a discount on whatever BHP they'd like to offer, their could be some interest.
I'm guessing just by looking at it, the P225 is prohib due to barrel length?
I've never seen a Sig 225 for sale in Canada.
Prohib, yes/no? Anybody know for sure?
In my unit we only have the BHP's.

Browning had nothing to do with the Inglis. Inglis hasn't made firearms of any kind since 1945 either. All the machinery is long gone. The pistol was made using drawings smuggled out of Nazi controlled Belgium by FN engineers and offered to the Brits. Who then got King to have them made. Personally, I'd like to get a hold of the twit who designed the sights for a few minutes.
Army.ca is kind of like listening to guys in a corporal's mess. Lots of chit-chat about things they know little about.

What's wrong with the browning that they need a new pistol for?

Many of them are wearing out, since new ones haven't been made by Inglis since '45. I have heard that there are plenty of new unissued in stores, but can't verify that. I somehow doubt it, because then at least the worn ones could be replaced with new issue at least until stocks are gone....

Any new pistol issued to the CF will also have to be made in Canada (stupid gov't policy) by Colt Canada. Understandably, competitors will NOT want to give a Technical Data Package to Colt.

Perhaps it's that we're probably using the oldest standard-issue service pistol of any nation at this time (the US replaced the 1911 as standard with the M9 IIRC), both in terms of design and when they were actually manufactured. England just replaced their BHPs with Glocks last year. The BHP is also a bit lacking in mag capacity, at least 3 shots behind most everyone else. At the time when 6-8 shots was standard for most armies, having a 13-shot pistol was amazing, but now it's lagging behind pistols that offer between 16-20 shots, not to mention you can't really mount accessories to a BHP, since the barrel's not threaded and it has no rails.

The pistol itself is alright (more or less depending on wear and tear, condition, etc, and so long as the front post doesn't go AWOL), it's usually the magazines that blow. Get any sand or grit (which there is apparently some of in Afghanistan) in there and the spring jams up. They double feed or don't feed at all, and cause massive amounts of stovepipes. And putting thirteen rounds in them (the max capacity) usually causes stoppages/jams as rounds are too tight in there and the action can't pull it from the magazine in the first place.

The handgun could use some obvious updating, like a mounting rail, better sights, lighter components, smoother triggers, better placed safety, etc etc, pretty much anything a handgun older than modern warfare needs to participate in modern warfare.

I love the hi power ,, Its my favorite 9mm ...
But the forces cant even carry em loaded and at the ready,(cocked and locked ) due to the design ....and mis trust of the manual safety ...
kinda pointless .....
our forces need a new sidearm ..... but I still don't see it happening anytime soon ....

CF pers treat the BHP like a brick. They train with them and throw them in a milk crate when they're done. Cycle beat up dummy rounds through the mags and pistol. Take the mags apart and physically stretch the springs out (which damages them) thinking it's going to improve performance. A lot of them don't respect the pistol (or other weapons). It's not really a surprise that the BHPs are ####ty and have stoppages all the time. Our stupid procurement rules will skunk any attempt to bring in an off the shelf pistol like a Glock, Sig226 or Plasma pistol.

Before our forces get a new pistol we need winter boots, uniforms and working vehicles IMO.
