Browning Canada - a company you just love to hate

So, over three years ago I bought a BHP from a well meaning dealer. Paid cash amid promises Browning Canada would be shipping the pistol to him within two weeks, and then from him to me.

Nearly a year later, Browning sends the pistol to the dealer (who shall remain nameless, as none of this was their fault), and they in turn send the pistol to me.

Now if the months of waiting - while they already had my money (or the dealer's) wasn't bad enough, it turns out that they sent me what I DIDN'T want. I purchased a .40 S&W BHP, standard (blued) with nonadjustable sights. They sent me a .40 S&W, standard, with ADJUSTABLE sights.

So a conversation with Browning Canada ensued. They asked me if it would make me happy to have one of their gunsmiths replace the slide...

We won't go further, but suffice it to say I ended up still having what I didn't want - and a bill from the gunsmith.

So it is my understanding that within a few days I will have yet another new BHP arriving on my front door - with, yet again, adjustable sights. I know that they're based in Quebec so there may be some language difficulties there, but is the difference between adjustable and nonadjustable sights that hard to understand when you're in the firearms business.

At least - apparently - there will be a cheque to reimburse me for what I paid their gunsmith (he shipped the pistol back to me COD). Which will leave me right back where I started from, except with three years having passed. Now there's progress for you!

Did I mention I had to write a letter to the president of Herstal (the company that owns Browning) to get them off their asses and actually even try to resolve this? Or that they have left one of the pistols in limbo as to who it is registered to?

Well, I have learned my lesson - at the mention of the words "Browning Canada", all I can think is "Run away, run away". I'll cash the reimbursement cheque and solve the issue on my own. One option of which is finding a Browning dealer who has what I am looking for sitting on their shelves.

Interestingly enough, while talking with a few Browning dealers as I start looking for somebody who has what I want, some have shared stories of the difficulties they have had getting service from Browning Canada in the way of replacement parts, chokes for shotguns, etc.

I don't know what Browning Canada's business model is, but I'm amazed they continue to survive. Browning Canada - a company consistently setting low standards and then failing to achieve them.

Meanwhile, if anyone knows where I can trade or work a deal on the BHP I want, or a Practical model which is about the same thing, PM or email me.

God, I hate that company!

Wasn't there a bunch of fixed site BHP's in .40 S&W for sale on the EE and with some dealers ~ 3-4 months ago?

I recently picked up this one from Bashaw Sports:

The grips are from Herrett's.

The plastic box has a Browning logo on it, but the documentation refers to FN Herstal USA and it came with a fired case in an envelope dated December 2003, indicating new old stock. I believe that the various dealers advertising these pistols likely got them from the same source. Tradex still has some of the SFS models listed on their website.

I would never pay somebody and the wait one year. What are credit cards for? Anyway, your story doesn't seem to line up,

you had the slide replaced and then still didn't have what you want???

I say whatever happened to the customer is always right? Man pays, in advance, for a fixed site BHP in .40 S&W, that's exactly what he should get.

Imo, you've been too patient ;) but I understand that you asked and paid for something specific, and you should fight for it until the end if that's what you absolutely want.

Jeez, I'm sorry my story doesn't line up for you.

Yes, I still didn't have what I wanted. And a bill.

A credit card was used, because what I wanted was not on the dealer's shelves and Browning told him it would be there in just a couple of weeks.

They sent the dealer/me an old style gun (from production years before my purchase) that had the old style adjustable that perched on top of the slide. And their gunsmith replaced it with a new slide that had the new style adjustables instead of a slide with a fixed sight. And then charged me for it.

Do you need me to scan the correspondence and send you copies of emails to satisfy your doubt? If you work for Herstal or Browning, I would just LOVE to discuss this with you offline.

Dude - Herstal is not a company, it's a city in Belgium...

"Dude"?????... who was the other guy who used that term? Oh yes, Sean Penn as the stoner in Fast Times At Ridgement High.

I'm sorry I wasn't specific enough for you. "Herstal" is an abbreviated way of referring to "Herstal Group". They are the corporation that own Browning, FN - and Winchester. They - ultimately - are the ones who sign the front of Browning Canada's cheques.

I don't generally use the whole term "Herstal Group" to refer to the company, any more than I use "Smith and Wesson Holding Corporation" instead of simply "Smith and Wesson".

Call it a personal aberration of mine.

The patience was somewhat forced on me, interspersed with some family issues and CF schedules. And the fact I already own the subcaliber conversion kits, and holsters, along with a gift of very nice Spiegel replacement grips.

If anyone was making a .22 conversion kit for the S&W M&P, I'd have probably just started agitating for my money back, sold what I already had that was BHP specific, and moved on. I really do like that handgun.

Anyways, there seem to be a few sources of fixed sight FN BHPs out there, at least with the SFS version. So it looks like there is a solution there; if I can't find the normal FN variant in the next day or so, then I'll grab one of the SFS versions and replace the SFS parts.

One thing about High Powers, Browning or FN, is they usually hold their value reasonably well, especially NIB.

Thanks to all who have been PM'ing possible sources.

So they sent you a gun which was probably more expensive than the one you wanted, and you werent happy about it?

The difference is $70.

Take a look at how the slide is milled for the adjustable sight versus the fixed sights. Now imagine you'd prefer to have Novak sights or any of the aftermarket sights available for the BHP. Ask yourself how you'd like to have that big ugly gap that would be left in the slide after changing the sights out. Or alternately, paying a gunsmith to fill in the gap and refinish the slide.

Make sense now?

Rick,
Weimajack has a .40 Sw SFS fixed sight posted on EE at $950.

I bought one from him and now have 4 SFS kits for my other Hi Powers. Try the SFS before you swap it out. It is really good.
