Browning SA22 or a copy? Did I get hosed? Pics up

Maybe it's an antique or the serial numbers got lost in the transformation. ( they almost look visible on the upper right corner of the receiver in one of your pictures)
Should be a good beater if it shoots well.

The op said it has Japan stamped on it, so that means it was made after 1974... All guns prior to that were made in Belgium at FN Herstal, 1914-1974...

Cheers

Jesus....this is why I don't buy guns on the EE. Don't know piss from paint!
Paint=Parkerized=Anodized..... And not even good paint like Guncote/Cerracote, straight up tremclad.

Shouldn't there be some scrollwork all around the edge of the receiver ?
The Browning SA's I've had, have had the extra scrollwork all around the edge, I think the JW ( Norinco) I had, didn't have it.
I could be wrong, chances are I am...

Good catch Jay.
I guess we can assume that Picasso is to blame for the vanishing serial numbers..... :)

Buying used over the net is always a roll of the dice , sometimes you win , sometimes you lose....as always , BUYER BEWARE....

I bought it from a good member here whom has offered a refund. I doubt he was aware of the problems with this rifle when he sold it. Although I did get it at a good price it wasn't a good price for the condition.

My nickel says that the serial number reappears with the application of some quality solvent or a razor blade to lift off the paint layer. Looked online for pictures of the location, and it seems that the number should be above the trigger along the side of the receiver.

But it looks like a Browning to me. The matched pair of nicks in the paint are from the take-down lock bumping the receiver on assembly, and give ya a pretty good idea how thick that paint is. Looks to me like the painter took pains to clean out the engraving but not the borders or serial number. Be interested to see what lays under the paint.

Canna tell ya what it should be worth. Y'all can discuss that while you decide whether you want to keep it, return it, or adjust the price paid.

It'd make a great walkin' around grouse gun! And a pretty easy refinish back to bluing if you feel the need.

Cheers

I would be pissed if I bought it as mint and it showed up like that .you have to decide if you want to keep it or not .we can not help you there.only you know what you paid .D

I find it hard to believe the seller didn't know it had been painted. I think it was another case of lack of realistic, accurate description and far away pics that really showed no detail and the seller was hoping for the best. On the other hand the buyer could have asked for more details and better pics. It's great the seller will take it back but this kind of problem might very well have been prevented in the first place.
