Hey guys, I was listening to a fish and hunt show on Montreal's CKAC sports radio last night. There was a segment where a Browning representative gave his top choices of calibers for bear hunting.

Here they are: .308 Win., 270 Win., 30 06 Springfield, 270 WSM, 300 WSM and 325 WSM. He said that he preferred heavier bullets for faster dispatch of the animals, because they caused a greater hydro-shock. He later added that he was now using a rifle (probably a BLR) in 450 Marlin for bear. He continued by stating that black powder rifles were useful under 100 yrds and that rifled shotguns, like the BPS were effective tools under 50 yrds.

I had a s**t eating grin on my face listening to that interview. They failed to mention the 358 Winchester among others. During the whole show, there were no mentions of S5 or Bill C-301, even during their sportsman oriented news report.

Sounds like he didn't mention another deadly bear killer, at least to 150 yards, the good old 30-30.

How typical, almost all his choices were fast moving smaller caliber bullets. Don't get me wrong I love my 270, 308 and '06. However, on black bears, 45-70s, 358 Wins, 350 Rem mags and their kin put them down with authority!!

Black bears are easy to kill. I consider them easier to kill than a big deer, and a wounded bear presents about the same danger to a hunter as would a wounded deer!

I almost bought a Browning BLR s/s black/gray laminate stocked take down in 450 Marlin late last year then I heard about the 416 Ruger so put it on hold.

It really is an awesomely small light package for bear defense and I all ready reload for the 45-70 so I would have only needed dies and brass and I was good to go the action is a bit clunky but I could live with that.

I'm thinking with a couple of spare mags it would be about the best bear defense rifle for the price on the market.
