Here's my 1916 Lithgow No1 MkIIIH Marksman rifle
What you look for is a numbered barrel & a H stamped on top of the butt wrist, if none of these are present, the chances are it just a heavy barreled range rifle.
Hopefully these photos will make amends for the other rifles i posted in this thread

From one of the OP's pictures, it looks like there are two numbers stamped on the front of the reciever like yours. The original and the new one to match the barrel. Rob, is there a serial of 4747 or 40198 on the rear right side of the barrel?

Paint or nickle plating. Reversible. While extremely odd, IMO, it can be reversed.
It starts to hurt when you see them chop the barrel to 12" , weld on vertical handgrips, bob the bolt and call it a CQB rifle.

Meh, they are having fun with them. If they were restored back to good aesthetic visual health the purists would still beat them up saying that's not the correct color blonde stock and the bolt doesn't match
I kinda agree, paint is only on the surface, nothing that cant be fixed, but it sure can be bought a big discount...
The bugger's are probably having more fun with them, unlike some folks who buy them, clean them and then just leave 95% of them on the rack to collect dust as part of their collection

There's something stamped just under the wood from the forend, but other than that I dont think there's any numbers there. Oh well, I was just after something to restore and have fun with. Would be neat if it was a sniper, but i just wanted a shooter. I haven't even tried it yet, the guy i got it from (not Bubba) said it grouped really well. I'll have to find out for myself.
It would have had mounts or a least areas where mounts would have been if it had been a sniper. Probably just a target rifle from way back when. Very cool rifle to do a full restoration though and should be a great shooter!

The 40553 on mine & the 40198 on the op rifle are rack numbers not serial numbers, quite common on Aussie rifles

Maybe a stupid question, but does the heavy barrel affect what type of furniture goes on it? fit wise?
Not a stupid question at all, the barrel channel needs to be enlarged to accept the slightly larger diameter barrel & the rearsight base reemed to fit & as the innerband is not used with the H barrel some have the hole for the screw filled.
The nosecap hole is NOT enlarged as some seem to think as the front of the barrel has a "step down" so the standard frontsight base can be fitted so the muzzle end is the same size as a standard barrel, the centering stud & spring inletted into the forend near the front of the barrel is also not fitted.

Thanks a lot for the info. I'm going to clean it up and take it to the range and try it. After that I'm going to strip the paint and order the parts I need and put her back together. Wish me luck!
