I saw one of these new calls for the first time the other day and after using the call I experienced an epiphany of sorts. I remembered a hunting experience from over twenty years ago when I first heard this strange deer vocalization.
I was hunting with my buddy Craven and we were set up on opposite ends of a thick bush surrounded by fields on three sides. It was raining on and off and it was first light in the morning. In retrospect I realize we had set up perfectly as the deer were staged in between us in the cover and the rain had masked our approach.
In the dark I had a nice young buck chase a couple of does out right past me and although I am sure they winded me it raised my heart rate I stayed optimistic. It was about this time I thought I heard coyotes growling and barking? The sound was very close and I could hear deer movement right with the growling.
Just as the sun came up on a little plateau of brush in front of me I heard a grunt and then the sound of ears slapping antlers. I looked up to see a nice eight point (biggest deer I had ever seen at the time) shaking the water off himself. He slowly walked down the hill grunting and growling with every step his nose was to the ground and when he got 35 yards from my I put a slug in the middle of his brisket as he lifted his head.
Craven heard the shot and started to walk towards me through the bush because he thought I was shooting at coyotes. He had been listening to the growls and barks and assumed this to be the case. I had a doe run out and then jump right back in the bush as he approached and I could hear several other deer moving just inside the cover. The whole time I could hear these same weird growling/barking sounds and it had me confused to say the least.
Craven yelled to me when he got close enough and asked what I was shooting at, I told him I had killed a buck! He yelled back that he heard coyotes in between us and to get ready. As he closed the distance we both saw several deer and at least one buck running away but no coyotes. Neither of us had a clear shot and our proximity to each other would have made it unwise anyway.
We had a short discussion on the sounds we heard but the big (a 130 class deer was big in 83!) buck on the ground soon distracted our train of thought.

While playing with this call I had this series of events come back to me and I remembered many other instances when I have heard this vocalization and thought it was something other than deer! I have mentioned this to the guys I hunt with over the years and many have heard these sounds.I have heard it described as barking, growling, and even like pigs grunting!

Has anybody else heard this type of call from whitetails? I am excited about this new growler from M.A.D.D. calls and I intend to get some a.s.a.p.

dont recall hearing that strange noise.....but a year ago while we were up at our camp...about 10 pm it was dark out...we were sitting outside by the fire having a cold pint..
soundedlike a person having a sneezing fit..r i guess soundedmore like a dog sneezing for about 30 seconds.. it had to be no futher than 30 ft away from us
jyc and dumbdawg was there also...jyc says it was a deer clearing its nose...
br...is there a link on that call to hear it?

That sneezing fit, is typical of a deer that is trying to clear it's nose so that it can better wind something that it sees, or hears, but cannot smell.
Also sometimes a deer that is downwind of someone verry smelly (Sorry, couldn't resist) :)

I've heard it a couple of times, in both cases a buck is hot on the trail of a doe. I can "duplicate" the grunt on my ridge runner, the grunt combined with an agressive rattle sequence during the rut can result in reckless buck behavior.

Well fogducker I can tell you that a Deer sniff, sneeze and wheeze are all very similar... it can be used for intimidation to ward off other deer, or it can be used as a warning call when a deer is frightened or unsure of a danger.
I have seen it used both ways... especially a doe warning fawns... she will sniff or sneeze at every bound to keep the fawns a rocking.
I jumped a young buck in the food plot this week... and he sneezed at least four times as he ran a big circle out of the plot... funny as hell.
Here are some sound clips with various vocalizations and what they mean... according to some guy.....
I have called a few deer to the gun and bow... and I don't much agree with many of the so called experts.;)
sorry I got nothing on the growl... yet...

Grunty bloated bleat happens when Doe is getting ready to put out ... and buck in hot pursuit. Some Humans have been known to make the same noise.:D I think rattling is the best technique .... works like a charm (in deer that is) from July(not that you can shoot them ;) ) to the end of the rut.

a black bear can also come across with that sound. I've heard the usual wheezing sound followed by what sounded like a bunch of sneezing just to see a big blackie immerge from the bush - and #### right off again back into it after he got a look at us ;) .
