I saw one of these new calls for the first time the other day and after using the call I experienced an epiphany of sorts. I remembered a hunting experience from over twenty years ago when I first heard this strange deer vocalization.
I was hunting with my buddy Craven and we were set up on opposite ends of a thick bush surrounded by fields on three sides. It was raining on and off and it was first light in the morning. In retrospect I realize we had set up perfectly as the deer were staged in between us in the cover and the rain had masked our approach.
In the dark I had a nice young buck chase a couple of does out right past me and although I am sure they winded me it raised my heart rate I stayed optimistic. It was about this time I thought I heard coyotes growling and barking? The sound was very close and I could hear deer movement right with the growling.
Just as the sun came up on a little plateau of brush in front of me I heard a grunt and then the sound of ears slapping antlers. I looked up to see a nice eight point (biggest deer I had ever seen at the time) shaking the water off himself. He slowly walked down the hill grunting and growling with every step his nose was to the ground and when he got 35 yards from my I put a slug in the middle of his brisket as he lifted his head.
Craven heard the shot and started to walk towards me through the bush because he thought I was shooting at coyotes. He had been listening to the growls and barks and assumed this to be the case. I had a doe run out and then jump right back in the bush as he approached and I could hear several other deer moving just inside the cover. The whole time I could hear these same weird growling/barking sounds and it had me confused to say the least.
Craven yelled to me when he got close enough and asked what I was shooting at, I told him I had killed a buck! He yelled back that he heard coyotes in between us and to get ready. As he closed the distance we both saw several deer and at least one buck running away but no coyotes. Neither of us had a clear shot and our proximity to each other would have made it unwise anyway.
We had a short discussion on the sounds we heard but the big (a 130 class deer was big in 83!) buck on the ground soon distracted our train of thought.
While playing with this call I had this series of events come back to me and I remembered many other instances when I have heard this vocalization and thought it was something other than deer! I have mentioned this to the guys I hunt with over the years and many have heard these sounds.I have heard it described as barking, growling, and even like pigs grunting!
Has anybody else heard this type of call from whitetails? I am excited about this new growler from M.A.D.D. calls and I intend to get some a.s.a.p.
