To quote BigRedd - "Buckshot is for varmints". But some areas in BC are shotgun with shot only. Bearing this in mind, has anyone tried Remington's Hevi-Shot buckshot on deer?

According to Remington's web site:

"Now deer hunters can enjoy the superior performance characteristics of HEVI·SHOT. Introducing Premier HEVI·SHOT Buckshot loads composed of a proprietary tungsten-based alloy, HEVI·SHOT pellets are 10% heavier than lead. Testing at Remington® has shown a 40% tighter pattern at 40 yards compared to standard lead buckshot. Even more impressive, the penetration is 18% deeper giving deer hunters performance unlike anything ever produced."

Also on Remington's website is the "Buck Hammer" slug, with the claim that the 20g outperforms competitors 12g for various reasons. These slugs are very heavy, supposedly much heavier than the competition because their weight is minus the wad, as opposed to the competition including the wad in weighing their slugs. Any comments on the validity of these claims?

Depends on what therory you use but by most methods of evaluation you'll find buckshot is at best a 25 yd proposition for deer. Personally, I'm sticking with slugs.

They require you to use buckshot for deer! To me that seems like a very poorly thought out regulation.

No, they don't require you to hutn deer with shot.

The area is zoned as "shotgun with shot only" so if you hunt anything from mouse to bear, you need to use a form of shot. :D

i think buckshot should be banned because its just not efficient, you have too make sure a sufficient supply of pellets hits the tartget animal for a good kill so in a way buckshot is just a fragmented slug and the range your shooting it from too make efficient kills, you can shoot a deer with a slug but if the reg's say only shot well thats a poor decision

does a slug count as "shot"? what about a round ball?

These areas specifically forbid any 'single projectile'. It has to be shot.

I guess it becomes an ethical issue: Should I even hunt a shot only area? My brother killed a doe in one of these areas with buckshot, but it was an under 15 yard shot.

at close range buckshot will work.

i've taken exactly one deer, with one round of buckshot, 7/9 pellets hit him, 5 passed completely though, and i recovered 2 while butchering.

range was 20 yards or so. he fell in his tracks.

buck shot

Only acceptable when using the "big" shell. Nothing smaller than 12 gauge 3 1/2" 000 magnum buck. I took two whiteys at 35 yards. Dropped one like a stone, the other went 30 yards. Full choke only.

Arch :D

I have 3 shotguns...all 2 3/4". Two SxS Full/Modified and one semi that has a poly-choke.

It is a stupid regulation... military and the police have done a lot of testing and the consensus is that slugs are safer at all ranges than buckshot. This is of course in an urban setting when it is neccesary to kill immediately and to control your deflections and stray projectiles. Isn't that the same as hunting on the Island

The one deer I took with buckshot was impressive, until I gutted it.
It dropped like a stone.
The head fell first, then the body slumped over.
On gutting, I found that one pellet of the Winchester 2 3/4" 'baby magnum'
had hit the small buck in the horns, nocking him cold. One pellet had gone straight through the heart, lodging under the hide on the off side.
All the rest had been deflected by brush, only two out of nine hit home, and a pretty wide spread for a ten yard shot. I was shooting through light brush, but I've never seen deflection like that before.

I have shot lots of game with buckshot as well... and it is a poor choice for many reasons.
Limited range.
Limited accuracy.
Limited penetration.
Limited energy.
Limited Meat.
Sounds like my ### life

Maybe I should write a letter to the M.O.E.

BigRedd, can you cite any studies regarding slugs in semi-urban areas? I doubt I'll have any luck. Just like the time I tried to get crossbows permitted on the Bowen Island archery only season. "It's just the way it is" was the educated answer.

"...buckshot should be banned..." Banned for hunting, but not banned outright. We don't want anything banned.
"...in some areas you MUST use shotgun with shot..." Where? Just curious.
"..."It's just the way it is" was the educated answer..." Sadly that's the answer to a lot of firearm related questions.
