Hey Guys,
Need a deer rifle and I've decided I want a 7mm rem mag. Now I need to figure out the best gun for a specific price and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I've looked at the Rem 770 It's around $650 and that's about as much as I want to spend, no more than $700 tops.

I've heard good and bad things about the 770, cheap stock etc. but also that it was quite an improvement over the 710. Is the accuracy really as bad as people claim? Or is it more brand loyalty than anything?

Is there any other combo's that you guy can recommend around the same price range? And yes I want to stick with the 7mm Rem Mag.

I have one of those. I bought it used, so I can't comment on the scope, but rumour has it the scope is of low quality and should be replaced as soon as you can afford it. The removable magazine or clip as savage calls it, is handy. There's not much left of mine as I have replaced the scope, bases, rings, stock, trigger and barrel.

I would say its a good buy, but I found mine strung vertically as the barrel heated. Mine is a 300WM and that generates a lot of heat, esp in a thin barrel. With a thicker barrel it holds a good pattern even with 5 shots in a row.

Edit: not to scare you, mine might have been a lemon and that's why it was sold at a gun show. I didn't like the flexible front foreend of the stock and found it touched the barrel at times. If yours does, you need to open up the barrel channel.
 
The Savage is a fine combo and the new ones are coming with Bushnell scopes instead of the Simmons. Rumor also has it that they will have the accustock.
 
I picked up a "cheap" Savage from the EE here.... then I put a 5-15 Elite mil dot on it .... then an oversized bolt... then an A-5 stock ..... and now it is no longer a "cheap" Savage but a rather pricey Savage that shoots like a damm and will eventually be converted to a .260. I am very impressed with the Savage line and would not hesitate to vouch for them.
 
Id prefer a new rifle - not a used R700.

I already have a Remington Model 7 .243 for an older rifle (1984) this time I'm looking for a brand spanking new rifle. I love the .243 just want something with a little more "whammy".

I have that rifle in 300 win mag with the original scope; I bought it brand new. Nice rig, okay scope with no failure to report. The gun is a little on the light side for a mag caliber, as a result it hits a little harder on the recoil. Doesn't really bother me, but it could bother others.

Personally I would go with a Stevens in 7mm mag. Then grab a Bushnell Trophy or Legend scope and some decent bases/rings and you have a nice brand new setup for under your budget. I've never had a single problem with any Stevens I have ever owned, it's just a solid buy in my opinion.

X2. Don't go for the combo rifle/scope. Buy the Stevens and the 3200 elite separately. You can pick up a 3200 elite for less than $200 shipped on the EE. I'm anti magnum lol. Consider a 7mm08 or even a 25.06.

Thanks for the info - and already considered and passed over. 25-06 and 7mm-08 are underpowered for what I'm looking for. With a difference of >500 lbs ft at 200 yards I'm all for the magnum rounds.

I am very interested in the stevens tho, you might very well have swayed my mind from the combo. Thanks again!
 
A 7mm Rem Mag is much more then you need for deer. I've always thought a .270 and 30-06 or similar class class cartridge to be more then enough. a 25-06 and 7mm-08 would indeed be ideal. So would a .260 Rem. or 6.5x55mm. If you're after Elk and Moose also then maybe get your 7mm Mag. A Magnum is good for the longer shot but a good hunter should be able to get closer and place his shots perfectly.
 
I have the fcpx111 in 30-06. The scope is crap and the rings are plastic. That said with a new scope and decent rings it is a great gun. My primary one for this years dear hunt.

I'm also a bow hunter - if I want to get close for a shot I'll bow hunt and shoot one 20-30 yards away :D

Ever since I was 3-4 years old and my dad bought me my first air rifle I've always wanted to shoot further and further. The 7mm rem seems like the ideal round for me, long, flat shots, with lots of power in case I want to get a moose or elk. I looked at more powerful rounds e.g. 7RUM, 7mm whetherby, 300WSM, 300 win mag and even 300 UM but they just seem too powerful for what I want to do. The bigger bullet is just going to do more damage to my deer meat, might be great for bigger game but I need a deer gun too (besides my already stated .243 Model 7) hehe

I'm all but certain I've decided to go with the Steven's and a nice $200 scope.

I saw this scope on "Sighting In with Shooting USA"... They said it was an amazing scope for $200 and has lots of features that competitors don't have at that price, anyone ever use one?

I REALLY want a ballistic reticle scope for those longer shots and from what I've seen this might be the scope to grab on a budget. Thoughts?
