Budget Rifle\scope Combo

Interesting thread.

The Stevens action/barrel and the Savage are interchangeable and very good.

Read some posts in the long range section, you'll see how good these are. Cheap scopes are not worth it. Glass might be clear but at some point it's not going to be looking where the bullet is going and the clicks won't be repeatable.

Good quality used scope will always be a better buy than a new one of the same price. VX-II or 3200 series are your best bet for the price.

7mm mag will get the bullet there but that's only good if it's going where you want it to.

look at the Tradeex website, you can get a very fine Husky in variety of calibers from 6.5x55 up to 9,3x57 generally for $200- $250,with''excellent''barrels then look for a nice older M-8 4 or 6X Leupold around $175-$200 and you will have yourself a second to none hunting rifle capable of taking anything in NorthAmerica for between $400 and $500-including a couple of boxes of shells.Spend a couple of hours fine sanding and re-oiling the walnut stock and it will look like new.I just restocked my old 6.5x55 with a nice Choate stock I saw on the tradeex site for $75.If you're on a budget-or just want a very fine hunting ifle without sacrificing anything in terms of quality, accuracy, etc, give Anthony a call

Im very specifically looking for a 7mm Rem Mag is the only problem - thanks for the advice on the scope though, I'll take a look for a used higher end sight.

Also, I want a synthetic stock.

I'm leary of older used scopes-except Leupold because of their lifetime guarantee.I find that you can pick up a used Leupold for the price of a new ,but cheaper ordinary scope. My Choate is a synthetic, the original stock was a bubba'd military stock, but I decided I wanted something a bit more weather proof
I understand your wanting a 7mm mag,but check out the SD of a 6.5x55 ,although I admit a prejudice for that caliber-based on the number of animals I've taken with it.If I held it straight, nothing went far

Don't think you can get a cheaper rifle than a single H & R . from what i've read they well made.

I would agree the H&R Handi Rifle series are good little guns for the money. You have to be sure you want a single shot. It places more emphasis on get the bullet placement correct the first time.

For the price you can't beat them.

But I would go with a Savage or Stevens bolt gun package if you want the fast second shot.

I had a Rem 710... It actually shot pretty good (Clover leaf at 100 yards), but it was a hunk of sh!t for fit/finish, etc. and they are pressed in barrels. I dumped it PDQ.

For that reason alone, I would not buy a 770. I've heard good things about the Stevens and the Mossberg (never shot either), but if it was me I would sooner pick up a used higher quality rifle/scope combo off the EE for nearly the same price.

It's a shame you abolutely need the 7mm Rem. Mag. The Marlin XL7 is a nicer and better looking rifle in my opinion, from all of the budget-minded rifles. Steven's-Savage's bolts look extra long and kind of peculiar. Weatherby is real nice but seems to be a pound heavier than everyone else. Mossberg 4x4 is grotesque looking.

If it has to be 7mm rem mag go for the Weatherby.

Yeah, those Weatherby rifles are cheap alright. Unless you were trying to say; "if it has to be a 7mm Mag go for the Weatherby", as in the cartridge, not the gun. The guy is looking for a budget rifle with 7 Rem Mag ballistics. I agree, I prefer the Wby round (and the 7 STW to either of them, but that's another topic), but the key here is inexpensive but still decent quality. - dan

i would go with the savage you cant beat the price and what you get is a damn fine rifle the mossberg dose have problems with bolts cracking under the stress of the MAG rounds after about 5000 or so and the blind mag on the stevens is not a bad thing i find it makes less noise then the box mag but thats your choise yes the stevens would be better as a floorplate but as a hunting rifle i say blind is the way to go and with it being a single feed its not hard to chamber load aswell i do it all the time shooting gophers with my 223 stevens and it works fine
