Took a yearling to the abattoir today to get butchered and they were butchering a buffalo. I asked what they were going to do with the hide, they said if I wanted it to just take it. Now that I have it, what to do with it. I was thinking I would like to get it tanned. Any other suggestions. Does anyone know where I can get it tanned at a reasonable price. Not to worried about it for a few days as with this weather it should stay frozen:)

Id be interested in where you can get it done also.

As an aside I was talking to a guy down in the states who was selling brain tanned buffalo hides at a craft show. He told me he could do one a week if he worked hard. Hides he had where going for about $600 a piece. Since I throw away about 50 moose hides a year I asked him how much he would charge to do one. He told me he had only done 2 ever and had no intention of ever doing another one.

I've tanned a fair number of different hides and there is no hell on earth like tanning a full old bull bison hide.

Coincidentally there is no smell on earth like a bison hide that has rotted.

Pacific fur dressers and dyers in Vancouver has done them, but they aren't really close to you. They are however experienced at doing large hides.

Might be a long ways from you, but Halfords and one other tannery, Western?, in Edmonton could do it. Not sure what "reasonable" means with a bison hide. Check em out on the internet. Halfords has a deal with Greyhound to send hides to them.

Grizz

International Fur Dressers in Winnipeg will do it, hair on only though. Be prepared to pay about $20 per square foot, it's not cheap.

If not more! We put down 3-4 a year here, I collected a hide, froze it and called around. After a mild cardiac infarction the hide ended up on a dead pile north of town.

Jesse Bergen at Vivid Taxiderny in Saskatoon did a bufalo hide for me. My #2 son arrowed a 2,800 pound bull, and the hide was incredibly heavy. Call him - 306-230-2933.

Think living room area rug size, and you will get an idea how large my son's buffalo hide is.

Jesse does nice work.

I was just gonna recomend any tannery. Just put the hide in a garbage bag and stick it in your freazer raw for a week untill its frozen right through and then ship it priority mail in a rubbermaid tote. it should be delivered in 48 hours and will still be frozen. you can do a wet tan for about 200 bucks then you have 2 years to make up your mind if you cant decide now. You could get a rug , dry tan , or full mount if you wanted. Good Luck !

I want to see you put a whole bison hide into a Rubbermaid tote. This is going to be awesome.

Maybe Van. isle bison are like the deer. Size X-tra small. I just harvested a Yukon Bison on Sat. a" little" bit bigger than a garbage bag

Its worth every penny, and if you don't think so just sell it at a profit.
Western tannery has done 10 or so for us and they turned out great.
Only thing that choked me is I rugged em with everything and they trimmed the sh*t outta them.
Seemed like a no brainer since I turned everything on em.
Oh well looks great anyways.
