Bugling elk?

Is it to early for elk to be bugling? I was out picking berries this morning and I swear I heard an elk bugle twice.

The local herd was chirping and short squeals on Sunday morning past, they seem quite vocal until things sharp sticks start flying over their head.

Gives you the itch to hunt don't it!

Elk will be bugleing already if the nights are a bit cold. They start now and get hot and heavy by the middle of the month.

Elk can bugle anytime of the year.

That being said the frequency is greatest around the rut and in areas of less pressure.

As a previous poster stated, a bit of cool weather can get them going....

If there is no season, my guess is competition for cows might be significant, and with higher bull densities you likely heard a legit bugle.

they have been going for two weeks here already....i heard bull bugling last year in november

elk are rutting right now...dont kid yourself thinking it takes the rifle opener or cold weather to fire them up
