building a 500 Jeffery. P14

I do like the idea of the dovetailed recoil lug on the barrel.i had thought about that on my 460 but the barrel is a pretty thing profile. This barrel has lots of meat on it. Yup ill do that

Thanks guys and ill get some videos of me shooting cool stuff with it for sure. Thats the main purpose of this rifle lol.

I installed a recoil lug on the bottom of barrel by drilling and tapping for a couple of screws, and then set the lug in place with epoxy as well. Bedded the lug into the forend.

I got the ammo from "halifax army and navy store" they ordered it in for me.

That sako ammo seems like an awesome price. Ill have to find some

Im not sure what the rifle was. I just bought it as a p14 sporter but the ear removal was tastefully done.

Im going to use iron sights on it. The p14 barrel has a marbles buck horn sight so ill use that and ill silver solder a front post.

And yup it should thump pretty good. Not as much as my wearherby but thats in limbo. I still shoot it but i wont take it across the country with me as my main carry gun.

I got it from Eagle Firearms. I’m sure he can order more in for you. The price might have went up.

I was back and forth on how to install the recoil lug on the barrel. Knowing me ill dovetail it and drill and tap it. I would normally use silver solder as i love the stuff but i dont want to put any heat into the chamber end of the barrel and i want to even less if its only on one side.

Ill check with them on their price for the 500 jeffery ammo.
When the halifax a&n store ordered the box in for me we had though it was a box of 20.( we assumed,it didnt have a count listed) but the 460 weatherby ammo was the same price and listed it as 20 rounds.

When it came in it was only 10 rounds. They gave me a deal on it and i paid them for it as they brought it in for me. But it was 10 rounds for 245 plus tax so im at 282$ or 28$ each. So that for sure is the most expensive ammo ive ever bought.

Full disclosure: I help run Eagle Firearm’s website and CGN account (started last week). But I purchased it when I was just a customer a couple years ago.

^^ thanks man. Thats a good price. If i cant find any dies i may have to see they will bring some in for me

I bought Dies from Buffalo Arms, looks like they are out of stock. Just a heads up, you will need an adapter for the Rockcrusher. The dies are 1” diameter.

I got my bullets from Trade Ex. Woodleigh PP and hydros.

As listed in the FRT 500 Jeffery is good to go

Is there anything else that the FRT shows as a bad boy?

Great work Evanguy!

Have you looked into cast bullet loads?

I have a Ruger RSM .458 Lott, Sako Brown Bear .375 H&H and a new to me, CZ 550 .416 Rigby

Its prohibited according to the oic. Any firearm “CAPABLE” of over 10000 joules is prohibited. You can’t trust the FRT because it isn’t law but the oic is right now. Even if you look at the 460 you can run 350 gr. That puts it well below the energy but again the firearm is capable of.
If you run the 600 gr. In the Jeffery you are at 8100 ft. Lbs well past the 10000 joules. More than likely you will never have a problem shooting it but just keep in mind.
That is gonna be a awesome gun thou. Have fun.

One guy loaded a 12 ga with a heavy bullet and it was over 10,000 J. Does that make all 12 ga prohib?

Not sure if these pics will work as ive never used my phone to add flickr links.

The recoil lugs line up with grooves already in the stock. Ill bed them for tight match up.

I used 2 as i like to go a little over the top and if one is good 2 has to be better lol.

They are 3/8" stock. 10.5mm tall and 18mm wide

Ive been working on everyone elses stuff trying to finish it up before i leave. So this has been on hold but i do also want this done before i go as well.

Ill get pics of the mag box tonight as it home now.

i got the mag box and follower finished. i used the factory follower and just belt sanded it flat as well as a little narrower to fit the box. I made the new mag box. its just water jetted out of 1/16 steel and welded up. it looks like crap but ill never see it and it works well. it also is a single stack mag and that works well for my plans on making it feed. i plan to use the feed rails in the receiver as single stack mag lips. basically widen up the front part back to about a half inch before the rim. the bullet sits real high in the receiver so the bolt wont miss it. it allows me to have 2 in the mag and 1 in the chamber.

it will be a pain in the ass to load as ill have to slide the bullet into the locking area push it under the feed lips and slide it back as it drops in the mag

i added pics of a 303 mag that i got the idea from so you can see my plan. i think its a 1885 Remington Lee mag.

now what i still have to do it-
cut the feed lips into the receiver
widen the barrel channel in the stock
bed the receiver and recoil lugs
remove brass pin from behind the mag in the stock and replace with a bolt
install sights

also make a resizing die with the chamber reamer, it may not work but where the whole case is a tapered i hope if i shorten the chamber in the die and use the shell holder to the die bottom as my "head space" i may be able to resize the case with it. maybe not the neck but at least the case and push the shoulder back a touch. ill make a bushing neck sizer for it.

How's the 500 Jeffrey coming along???
Everything looks to be looking almost finished, very nice!
My favorite action, there is a reason A-Square chose these to build there big guns on :)

Its coming along. Ill have pics this weekend i plan to assemble it and bed the action saturday. And yeah the action is huge
I wish i used one for my 460 weatherby build. It would have been easy to fit that case in. As of now i have to use round nose bullets with a max OAL of 92mm opposed to the 94mm factory rounds are.

What type/brand bullets are you using as of now?
My friends 505 Gibbs ,he is using Swift Aframes and Hornady , not sure what type of Hornady?
What type of brass are you working with?
Can't wait to see new pictures!

Great work!

I am wishing I had snagged one of those 50 caliber barrels now. I have been thinking about making a 50 cal something just under the 10K Joules limit, just because they banned them.

Was thinking about a 50-338 Lapua or some other similar wildcat but the Jeffery is a good option other than brass availability. I was even thinking about a 50-110 throated to use spitzer style bullets in a single shot bolt action. In a modern rifle with modern brass a 50-110 can be loaded far beyond it's blackpowder parameters. But not sure how much work it would be to make a rimmed case work.

Would the Jeffery fit into a Remington 700 action or does it need a bigger one like yours or something like a Mark 5?

Anyways, cool project, keep us posted!
