Building a billet lower...

Sounds good, looks good, I'm local to Dlask in the winters, so I can pick it up from them if the magwell's the last portion done, anodize it black, and fire it back to you. I can do another colour though I assume black's what you're going for and it's what the batch I'll be doing is.
That would work perfect but my assumption is that I won't be able to have the mag well cut last. It would probably have to be done as one of the first operations so it can be clamped.

Also, I was hoping for hot pink as an anodizing. :D

ARRRRGHHHHHH! I was onboard untill this!!! Burn the pagan!!!!!!;)

How about Autumn Sunrise? Dark Cherry Pearl or Sky Blue Pearl would be quite pretty, too. Then again, I would like to see Sparkling Graphite on a rifle as well.

The magazine well... :) Oh, yeah, I almost forgot...:dancingbanana:
The ever amazing fun of making the magazine well in receivers…:D
You know, the most efficient way to make the holes in the donuts
was invented by a production baker who had one hand only...:D

Congradulations on posting pictures of mag wells that in no way helps me to make them. :D
I'll try to help you to have them made for you, but not you to make them (yet).
So, send me the info I asked you about and I'll see what I can do.

Did you cut those?
Yeah, I learned it from the amputee baker who was making the holes in the donuts single-handed:D

Explainations? Did you cut those?

Sounds like he broached it, if I have the terminology right.

I believe Dlask uses four passes of this, one on each corner, but you could just make up a large broach and press it through once the hole was roughed in some other way.

Thats the right terms. You could make 1 large broach, but the force needed to use it and the equipment to drive it become more expensive. Cutting a corner at a time, even an abour press would supply the force needed.

No, the ones in my pics are broached.
Well, nothing I posted in here is illegal, but if you feel more confortable to PM me,
go ahead, I'll try to respond when I have time.

All the big manuf in US I know of, do the mag well by broaching.
The tooling differs from case to case.
Keep in mind that there are almost 150 companies who are selling AR in States.
Some of them do all of their own machining, some not.
Colt used to do everything on their receivers. Not anymore, now they contract out.
STAG has almost everything done by another companies. So does RRA, so does Wilson and many, many others.
The progressive broach used by the company who does machining for some of the above
is about 4 feet long, has 84 cutters on each side and works in one pass (maybe less
than 2 seconds to finish one well).
Other companies use one single cutter double-sided less than 3” long
that works on 6-10 passes to finish one well.
There are many types of broaches that can be used on wells.
On AR15’s in 5.56, DlaskCo is making the well by CNC broaching, which is ok for small to medium productions.
If they used to EDM (and on what type of mag wells), I don’t know, you have to ask them.
I know of EDM done in small production runs, but not for DlaskCo.
It’s useful in firearms when cutting conic (tapered) holes or complex 3D cams.
I had EDM work done for me by other people, but I don’t know much about the process.

As for partly machined legal status the most I have been able to get as for information was through Customs...they basically said that the main holes used to connect the upper receiver to the lower receiver can not be machined...regardless of any other holes, if those ones are machined then it changes the status to a "Barreled Weapon or reciever of such"

I still have not received any kind of clarification from the CFC...and I doubt I ever will

Wow, thats pretty ridiculous when the government department set up to deal with firearms can't answer a question like that. LAME.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldnt this infringe on some copyright laws?
How are you going to get a serial number for the lower?
