Building a Classic Sporting rifle

It was a relic that sort of resembled a rifle. Decades in salt water will do that. The usual rear sight, flattened, forward swept knob, slender stock.

Thats pretty cool then. I restored a LEC rifle that probably looked similar to what you found. ( well maybe not that bad but rough)

Anyone who needs to be thoroughly humbled for the day, I heartily recommend you follow this link and check out what a man with a wife and family and a full-time job and an average paycheque can accomplish in his "spare time". Make sure you're holding something soft for your jaw to drop onto.

well this rifle is on hold for a little while. ill get back to it this summer. really i need to do some blueing on the barrel and nut. also i need a stock for it. ill be close to some guys that do nice wood work so ill probably use them

i took a job on a small island off the sunshine coast and i leave for there in mid April so any extra funds and time needs to be used for packing and moving and finishing up projects that i can use a full machine shop for.

there is a lathe at my new work so ill be able to keep these rifle projects going once i get setup there. no mill though, so ill probably buy one my self

right now i have a huge push to get my 500 jeffery finished before i go. bolt it done, barrel is done, mag is done, stocks done. all i have left it open up the receiver rails to make it feed. its a single stack mag now
also working on getting my 084 rebuild with new bearings/seals, piston and rings

Do you have a post on that 500? I’m sure it’s damn interesting

Ive posted a little about it in my big bore thread but that was mainly my 460 weatherby.

Ill make a thread on it if you guys want to see it.

A few details on it though to hold you over until i get pics up in a new thread.

P14 receiver and bolt
Sporter p14 wood ( typical cut down factory stock)
2 rounds in the mag 1 in the chamber.
The barrel is 18" long and was a 32" 50bmg gunsmith special. Its 33mm at the knox and 27mm at the muzzle

6" long knox at 33mm then 6" of 2 degree taper then 6" of straight 27mm

Chambered like a rimmed case to set head space. (0.065" bolt face to barrel face)
Then counter bored the chamber end to expose the extractor groove.

All in all it weights 10 pounds give or take a few oz. Ill re weight it now that the chamber is cut and the mag is worked on.

I did just remember that the barrel channel needs to be opened up so i cant get pics of it assembled tonight.

The plan for it is to make a short quick acting thick bush gun that i didnt have to worry about damaging. Build on the very cheap ( under 600 including the new reamer)

A 10 round box of norma costs 245$ so i only have 10 rounds. And am looking for dies

EDIT here is the thread on the p14 500Jeffery https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2125755-building-a-500-Jeffery-P14

Its been in a box for the last 3 months. Im all moved in and settled on the west coast. so i started unpacking my projects, I just took it out the other day and started playing with it again trying remembering where i was with it.

I have a fish belly mag being made for it to replace the LEC mag that is in it now.

I also ordered 4 slabs of wood to make a stock for it. Im not sure what wood ill use with the CCH
They should be here next week. Ill get pics of them when they come in.

The rough sizes of the blanks is 6"x40"x2.25" thick
I ordered 2 slabs of Bocote and one of black walnut and one of claro walnut. They look good, no cracks or checking and are highly figured.

Has anyone on here ever worked with Bocote wood before? I hope to start in on it this week when it arrives.

Ill make a poll with the 4 pieces of wood to get opinions of others on it. As its kind of an exotic wood and may look out of place on this rifle in some opinions. Although they are both quite dark pieces.

I knew bocote has been used for knife handles, so I did a web search. Sounds as if it should work for the stocks. Came across a warning not to breathe the dust, although that applies to a lot of woods.

so I have pics of the wood now, crazy how heavy the bocote wood is, one blank of it weighs more then both the walnut blanks. but I plan to build a thin slender stock with it so it shouldn't add to much weight. I really like the look of the claro walnut blank as well and its way lighter in weight.

of the 4 pieces of wood 2 are bocote and 1 is claro walnut and the last is black walnut.

using the fist pic to make this claim, I like the second board from the bottom, that's bocote and the 3 board that's claro walnut, in the last pic the claro is on the bottom and the bocote i like is second from the top (one of the bocote clearly needs to go through a plainer)

what do you all think i should use on this rifle

I also have to use the other boards to make a stocks for 2x Remington no 6, a Stevens 1915 favorite and my Merkel 47E over this winter or more so the next few years

ya know, the more I look at them the more the claro walnut becomes my favorite. it only cost me 75$ so I couldn't pass on it when I was already paying shipping for my other wood but it cleans up really nicely. and after feeling the weight of the bocote I'm unsure on that. I think it will make the gun feel to oddly heavy for how small it will be. it only has a 19" barrel and I want it to be slender.

I also need to order some material to make the fore stock tip, grip cap and butt plate, I'm not sure what ill use. I like the idea of tarnished silver, it should only take a few oz's but in its polished state it may be a bit much and maybe ill just use it for some subtle inlays like on some factory lee speeds. I little oval on the butt stock and a small diamond on the bottom of the fore stock. then use horn or ebony for the tip, cap and butt plate

well i got the wood figured out, I plan on making 2 stocks and see what one I like the best. but really the claro walnut is my favorite and ill put the most time and energy into that one, but when I drill the butt stock bolt hole and inlet for the receiver ill do the work to both stocks. then finish the bocote at a later date.

here are pics of the walnut cut into 2 pieces for the rifle stock. I used the rest of the claro walnut to make blanks for my 2x Remington no6's and I also cut 2 pieces from the bocote wood that look the same as the walnut ones pictured.

the wood is a bit more plain then I had wanted it to be and I really wanted this rifle to have nice wood on it but with the cost of the nicest woods and this is my first rifle stock I'm making I figured I should learn on this cheaper wood

so I haven't done any work to the stock other then that is seen in the pics above. I'm not sure where to start. well I know to drill the butt stock bolt hole and get it mounted to the receiver before starting t shape it but with out a full machine shop at my disposal now that i have moved I'm stuck in a rut of thinking I don't have the tools to do work, even though I look online at others posts and how they do it and they use a simple jig, extended drill bit and a hand drill. I have those tools. I donno, But I do have to get it started and finished. I want to take it on a goat hunt next September

but in the mean time waiting to be ready to do the stock I have bought some bullets and dies. I bought 80x 140gr Sierra SPBT and 100x 160gr Hornady RN, i also have 100x 129gr Hornady to develop a load for it, i want to get 2400 fps with the 160gr, ill work with the max pressure of 49kpsi for the Lee Enfield receiver over the pressure for the 6.5x53r

I have 50 formed cases from 303 brass. the dies will let me size them all the same and insure proper function instead of just using my 6.5x55 die to bump the shoulder
I plan on making 100 more brass from new unfired 303 brass
