Building a Classic Sporting rifle

I don't have much to show for what's been done on this rifle in the last little while. I drilled and mounted the butt stock only to find out I cut the pistol grip at the wrong angle and to short when I roughed it out, so i have since been looking for someone to make me a stock for this rifle. now that I'm paying someone to do it ill be able to get what I really wanted in the stock.

i bought a NCG "classic 3 leaf express sight" for my rear sight and I noticed with this thin barrel profile (LEC profile but only 19") that the sight looks to wide and out of place. also in the base I make for the express sight I want to add in a ladder sight too. and such a big sight on a skinny barrel looks odd.

so now the plan is to get a new barrel (I have a reamer lined up) and cut it to 24" and don't turn it down to such a slender profile then install a full rib then in that rib (I have one off a mauser barrel lined up i believe) it has an dovetail for the rear sight and an intergraded front sight ramp in it

I'm also going to send the fish belly mag (when its finished) the bolt and the barrel nut to be engraved. after the barrel nut is engraved ill send that for CCH
on the bolt I'm getting the knob knurled and the handle, dust cover lugs and bolt head fancied up with the same pattern that will go around the mag and barrel nut

I added a pic of what I want the mag bottom to look like and its the same pattern I want around the barrel nut and on the bolt handle/dust cover lugs/bolt head
this is not my pic of the mag.

also I need to figure out the grip cap, forend cap and but plate still.

Well after messing up the cheap (but nice looking) blank I had for this rifle, I bought a new blank (much more high end and proper for a classic rifle), its a high contrast chunk of English Walnut.
and I also have lined up 2 people to make a stock for this rifle, one is go to rough it out on a copping machine and the other is going to finish it.

the 2 blanks of Bocote I have are just to heave for this little rifle. so ill save them for another project.

turns out when you are very good at what you do, you are in high demand. To get a single person to do the stock I was looking at over a year (next spring) before it could be started with the people I have been talking to.

I also have an Engraver lined up to Engrave my parts before sending them for cch and blueing then going to the stock finisher to be installed.

this build spiraled out of control, it went form a parts bin/ DIY type of build to now costing me more the any rifle I have ever owned, and I still have parts to buy and work to be done.

here are a few pics of the blank ill be using for the stock.

So there has been work started on my stock for this rifle, there was some major delays on my end of things getting him the parts he needs to make the stock. the stock makers is doing great work and I'm very happy with the communication. the pics were texted to me so they are low quality but the butt stock is roughed out on the copier and the forend in the pic is what he's going to use as a template. so it will be cut over size from that but should finish to near that nice short slender forend. the barrel is tiny so that forend should fit it very well. I'm also going to get a small piece of the same walnut that made the stock to have a knife handle with with it

i also got the butt plate I'm going to use for it and the barrel rib. the mag is finished and on its way to me (well it still needs its engraving done) with the barrel rib i have to shorten it about 2" so i will do that where the rear sight mounts, i plan to run a NCG 3 leaf express sight without the base mounted in the rib. i also have a 4 leaf Winchester sight that im thinking about. i wish the has a ladder sight on it as well though, but the barrel is very short and thin so it may look odd to have a 5" long rear sight, that may be better suited for a rifle with a 28" barrel.

the NCG 3 leaf is 2.25" long and the Winchester is 3" long

so the fishbelly mag showed up today, (its a converted smle mag) I'm very excited to have it for this rifle and very pleased with the work. B_noser you did an awesome job!! JimHarrison thanks for sending him the original mag to make all of this possible.

this mag functions with 129, 140 and 160gr 6.5mm bullets. the 129's need to be loaded a bit long to make them hold in the mag properly. but they all work if loaded to 3" long and skip the crimp grove just set the OAL to 3".

now this mag is ready to go to engraving and then blueing once the stocks finished and I get the rest of the rifle back, so I can send all the parts to engraving at once then all to blueing at once.

in the pics I have it pictured with a factory LEC mag (what i was going to use in the rifle before i came across the ability to use a fishbelly mag) it would have looked ok but quite millspec for this rifle I think

the stock is coming along nicely, I got these pics for Wayne today. just needs to fit the tang safety and finish it up a few things then do the checkering.

I plan to have a fine checkering done, as cost/budget is gone out the window about $2000 ago, now its just build exactly what I want.

I do kind of wish I started with this no budget attitude as the receiver has no engraving on it but its already CCH, and CCH it again may warp it. so the receiver will stay plane, I am going to get the barrel nut and mag engraved though, the send the barrel nut for CCH. the barrel, mag and bolt will go for rust bluing.

I just bought some .999 silver to make the stock oval. I may go with EJD in it for my initials or leave it blank.
