Building an Ar-10 to be non-restricted

So I recently discovered that the AR-10 predates the ar-15 and is therefore classified as a non-restricted rifle. Also, I want to build my own AR-15/10, and I want to have rifles I can fire on my parents 4 acre property without facing jail time.

So here's my idea: build an AR-10, that way I can take it to my parents and shoot away. BUT!! I've heard horrible stories about guys building AR-10s only for them to be classified .308 caliber AR-15s... So how do I make sure this doesn't happen? What is the difference mechanically/technically between the two? (Aside from caliber.) And what's the best AR-10 receiver set to start with?

You can buy receivers (or complete rifles) for the Stag-10 and BCL 102. If you're looking for other AR-style non-restricted, there's the RWA 180B and MDI SLR. Also ATRS has some stuff to offer. Alternatively if you're just looking for an AR-looking black rifle, there's the WK-180c and Kel-Tec SU-16 Tactical.

Is that my ONLY option though? Can I not get one of those AR-10 labeled milled stripped upper and lower sets I see all over the interwebz? Or is the Stag 10 set the only option?
These are most likely in the US, and are probably export restricted. Not to mention they will not have any FRT number (ie. not have been "stamped" NR by the RCMP lab). While the FRT number has no legal basis, it's pretty much became obligatory.

And BCL , that’s it.
BCL is/was NEA, I wouldn't trust anything Canadian made... Not enough of a big market to care for quality products.

Is MacDef still open for order ? I kinda understood they were running the pre-order and "that's it". The RWA 180B / WK 180 even though "AR-180" derivative are proprietary rifles (ie. non existant after market for most parts of the action). ATRS MS is your best bet, but 1 year lead time on a set.

Macdef sets just started showing up on one of the vendor sites, looks like they may be catching up.

Four acres + neighbours + .308 could be problematic.

Choices are limited to the AR10ish rifles classified as non-restricted.

It's in the middle of nowhere, during hunting season the gunfire goes from sun-up to sun-down, there are 12 guahe shotguns going off constantly the rest of the year as well. (I think someone near by does skeet shooting regularly.)

why do people have to always chime in with thier legal opinion when the thread is about ar-10 type rifles. Who gives a flyin fug about making sure his range is legal..... that's his business not ours.

cripes we have so many fuggen internet police lately.... lighten up folks geesh.

so about the AR-10 type rifles..... I'm still a bit confused on what AR-10 rifle is non restricted in canada..... I think it is the original stoner creations and when armalite bought out stoner , at least i think that's how it goes..... The armalite AR10 was classified restricted.
As was mentioned by others that know more than me..... other manufacturers of large frame AR type rifles might not have submitted for a non restricted FRT simply because they saw the armalite was already classified restricted.
Stag-10 is the first large frame rifle from the states that submitted for non restricted and lo and behold they got it.

I would hands down recommend a stag-10 , go see arms east and give them your money

Start by buying more than 4 acres.

If it's 4 acres that was severed off a large chunk of farmland and the nearest residence is several km away it's not a problem. If it's 4 acres lots in an executive estate development then obviously it will be an issue. Without knowing the OP's situation, don't make assumptions about him. With regard to distance from dwellings or roads, I've lived several years of my life in places where I could legally fire out the window of my house. "Permission from owner or occupant" is the key wording in Albertan rules. And the usual road distance out west for secondary roads is "off the roadway" as in beyond the ditch or fence line. Or 15m off the centerline/edge of pavement/whatever. Is Ontario the same?

Back to the OP's question...I agree that what you are looking for is a Stag 10. I hope that other manufacturers (such as Nemo...hehe) are able to get their rifles classified as NR but I'm not holding my breath.
