I have now run out of Trail Boss and Clays for my .45 CAS loads.
What bulky powders are currently available for .45 Colt loads, to drive a 250 grain LRNFP ?
I have Titegroup, HS-6 and HP-38 but looking into the charged cases, the charge seems almost lost.
 
Nope. My CA load with the 250gr bullet is 6.2gr of TiteGroup (960fps). My plinking load is 7.0gr (1000fps). Both for rifle.

Yeah, there’s not much in the case, but I’ve never had one not go bang. I got over the microscopic amount of TiteGroup in the .45 Colt case. It works just fine.

The data shows a starting load of 9.0 grains HS-6, which is more than the max load in almost all other powders they offer, so that ought to be visible, but almost anything could be lurking inside a 45 Colt case and be hard to see.

I find gray powders a lot easier to see down inside a case than black ones.

Really hoping Trail Boss make a comeback!
 
Many of us older reloaders have a bit of this or that stashed away, but eventually everyone has to go with something currently sold on the Canadian market, so the real question is what to choose from what you can get!
 
There is a guy on utube called everything black powder. He has video's and it doesn't look that hard or expensive to make your own at home. I currently have lots of black powder but if needed it I think I would be making my own.
He loads 45 colt all the time. He claims better performance with black than smokeless I that caliber. He loads everything you can imagine from Keith 45/90 bullets in 45 colt to squib loads. He also shoots some smokeless and duplex loads.
 
Is it to be shot in a "strong" rifle and revolver? What's the MV limit for CAS?

However, if you want a near full case, that will ignite with consistency, operate at a "low" MV, and work in a gun that's of low to moderate strength, no smokeless powder exists that will do that.

I have used a full case of SR4759 (19.0 grs) with a 250 gr cast bullet in a strong M92 replica that had an MV of about 1250 fps. It could be loaded down from that and still work well. Powders near that in Burn Rate and of similar density might do the same, e.g. A5744. It's possible too that 4227 or 4198 might work in the same way but I have not tried them in 45 Colt.
 
SASS covenants specify 1000 FPS for revolvers and 1400 FPS for rifles.
I shoot Stainless SASS New Model Vaqueros with 5 1/2" barrels and a toggle action 1873 model rifle.
 
If you can't get red dot or unique etc why not use a fast powder like w231? Should work with 200g?
You need a bullet load combothat will shoot point of aim? Would a 200g be about right?
 
Years ago I had an 1875 Remington and a 73 Winchester in 44/40. I'm just going from memory and it was long time ago but I was shooting blue dot and I think the charge was 11 grains. I'm sure I was us blue dot I'm just not sure of the weight

If the .45 Colt reloads are for Cowboy, then FFG or FFFG could be just the thing for historic authenticity and giggles, other than for the extra cleanup afterwards.
 
I has used hs6 in .45 Colt can’t give you much in the way of how accurate they were(shot out of a martini Henry with adapter) or anything other then my loads were low on the chart. With these load in the martini I was able to hear the striker drop and the thud on the back of the range. Edit any of the bulkier shotgun powders should do the trick for you your not gonna get complete case fill but it’s not really needed just make sure you are not getting double charges and pay attention.

That's a thought. There are a couple happening around here in the next couple of months.
Just have to make sure they are still sealed.
