you could have just said no?

I like CO's. they have a very important job to do. I make sure I always have extra coffee on hand when i know one is in the area. around here they are seen as the enemy by many and treated like ####.

you want them out of your hair? have your licences ready and let them be on their way.

Thats why I never wear the blaze orange anywhere but the bush. Always take it off after the hunt. Its wrong, but its like a big come harass me sign for cops and C.O's. Couple years back, the cops had a road block set up checking anyone driving by wearing orange hats and coats. "Got any alcohol or firearms with you sir" huh...out of the truck plz sir.

Since when do you have to hunt to wear blaze orange? there would have been alot of people in jail in my old school

That kinda makes me want to go buy one .............even though i don't hunt, and coincedently i was thinking of keeping a blaze orange touque in the truck just in case i ended up stopped on side of the road. just to make myself more visible.

I guess we had the opposite experience.

We were just leaving the barn to do another small valley drive when the CO pulled into the farmyard where we hunt.

He came and asked how many in our party to which I answered 5 but we only have 2 deer hanging in the barn.

He and the rather cute Junior CO came around to the barn and inspected the deer.

We went back to the trucks and the other guys had come out as well.

In the back of the ministry truck was a small fawn that had died smashing headlong into a tree (broken neck) while being chased by dogs....

I asked (jokingly) if we could have it....

He said........heck you guys are doing so badly this year you can use the meat!!

With that he took my data and I took the deer. It is considered the same as a roadkill so I did not use a tag.

Meanwhile of course........we used the opporunity for my 15 year old son to learn FOR HIMSELF.....how to gut a deer!! LOL!

I have some pictures that I will post later.

Right now we are off to the woods again.

Oh and at no time did they even ask to see our tags, permits guns or anything. Perfectly polite and jovial.

Apparently some people have a problem with enforcement. This (quote above) is the way most of the F&W guys I know would act.
If you are walking around dressed like a hunter in hunting season, heading for a truck, well you must be a duck then eh? Good on him for checking your licenses, that's why you carry them. Then when they see you driving around later they won't bother you while your hunting.....

Damn..........did you get her number? :D

I've got no probs with law enforcement !.I keep in touch with our Co at least 1x month where my camp is in Algonquin Park and my brother is a Co in Nova Scotia and even he said that shouldn't have happened as there's no law saying you can't where orange unless it's hunting season !.In my brothers opinion who is a CO said they where outside of doing what was needed and called for.
I know the CO is a new young guy and he also had the retired Co with him .I said to the older CO I thought you were retired and he said yes, just helping out and for company.Maybe the new guy is trying to make a name for himself,I don't know ?. I know of new guys trying to make names for themselves and they end up sitting at a dest doing paperwork in the head office while another CO does their field work.
The CO I have now in Algonquin Park is a super guy and we get along great,he even brings my hounds back to camp if he see's them out of our area and has given us his mnr gps,cb radio and keys to all the gates for the park so I could find hounds if they got out of the range for my tracking system.I can't say enough good things about him but wasn't impressed about my stop down home yesterday !!!.

I am actually glad to see that the COs are making a presence, however,I don't agree with checking someone out that obviously is not hunting,or in a location where they couldn't possibly be hunting.

If there is no firearm in my presence at the time, then sorry but I am just wearing an orange coat and hat.

COs are like anyone else - there are fine decent ones that anyone would be proud to claim as a friend, and there are some blue ribbon jerks.

The jerks usually get their comeuppance in due course. Some end up being lured into driving their pickups into irrigation ditches...some end with dead moose heads frozen to their doorsteps several times a year, or deer guts frozen across the windshields of their pickups....on the other hand, some can't walk into the restaurant without a couple of locals buying them lunch.

It all depends on their attitude, and how they decide to fit into the community. If they do the 'Gestapo' act, they usually pay the price. If they're fair and respectful of the people they serve, they usually enjoy respect and assistance in return.

details generally help;)

what did he do, strip search you in front of your buddy:p

you don't give any info so its hard to feel sorry for you.

did the warden start demanding licence's and registration, or was he just chatting you up to see how its going?

"...I had orange hat, he had orange coat..." You both have a hunter orange hat and coat with you? Both are required in Ontario. The CO was likely looking into that. They can stop and/or inspect any boat, vehicle or aircraft at any time.

I don't blame him for stopping you Ed, I would have stopped you too!!! :p

I heard our new local guy is a bit of a meat head, he should be spending his time on William Street in Colborne.

Just playing devils advocate;)
Unless he figured they were "hunting" in the resterant?? what they were wearing is irrelevant. I mean did he really think most poachers hang around in resterants in blaze orange with illegal animals laying in the back of their trucks!
I don't believe a hunting license is required just to have dinner with an orange touque on;)

With out probable cause???

He isn't arresting the guy for goodness sakes. He asked if he was hunting, and if the guy answers "yes" then he can check his licenses. The CO could also have seen the truck driving down a logging lease or, who knows what. He asked if they were hunting that day, and if they were I am glad that he checked their licenses. For goodness sakes, it isn't like he was slapping the cuffs on and shoving him into the back of the car. They also could have been looking for a poacher that matched the vehicle description (like a crew cab, dark blue chevy?) and he was doing due diligence on the file.
Why does every time some guy gets approached by an authority and asked reasonable questions, someone on this site needs to start a "oh my god, did you know that.." thread.
Did 88 have a knife on his hip? Does his truck have pro-hunting stickers? Is it a horrible thing to get to know your CO's? I dearly hope he didn't ask horrible questions like "whatcha hunting this year?"
It sounds like a bunch of lefties in here.
