Is it just me, or has the availability of certain brands of bullets changed over the years?

I remember back in the day that any place you went into would be ripe with lots of Speer, Sierra and Nosler in stock. These days it seems that wherever you go there is a HUGE selection of Hornady, some Sierra, and very little Speer (especially Speer pistol stuff).

I certainly don't have anything against Hornady, but what did I miss here? What changed?

And it doesn't seem to be just a Canadian thing, either. I spend quite a bit of time south of the line for work and it seem to be the same proportions of brands down there.

I just always really liked Speer pistol bullets and Sierra rifle bullets and wondered why they don't seem to be as well stocked anywhere as they used to be.

Anyone?

I don't believe this to be true.

I'll give you a quick example. I use 168 and 175 SMK's.
I was looking for some last week.
I emailed a site sponsor on availability and he told me he has over 10,000 of each on hand.

I called another supplier about an hour away from me and he said he had "quite a bit" on hand but his prices were more than I expected to pay by over $25.00 a box.

I went to my LGS and found 6 500ct boxes of 168's on the shelf so I bought 4.
I also saw some RWS Championship Edition .22LR for 87.95 a box.
I didn't pick them up because I normally shoot RWS Club.

After looking around the best price I found on the RWS Championship Edition was $129.99 so I went back today to pick them up.
Upon entering I saw a wonderful sight.
Neatly piled boxes of 500ct 175gr SMK's so I bought 4 boxes.

The component fairy was looking out for me this month.
Awaiting the flood of PM's

more stuff is being produced then ever before. consumption and hording is higher then it has ever been.

If you want something, it is available in time.

Just book a backorder and be patient

Its tough to find anything these days, and when you do the prices are ridiculous. Its seems most of the retailers are cashing in on the shortage by raising prices because they know they will sell the popular bullets/powder/primers regardless of the high prices. The worst part is seeing retailers raise prices on old stock to reflect recent price increases even though the old stock was purchased at old prices. It's a frustrating time right now...maybe things will get better in the future but it's not looking good right now.

wholesale sports in Nanaimo has a fair stock of everything right now.......only problem is they increased their prices by 25% over what online sponsors and the real world are charging, with that said I am going to assume that they will be well stocked until the next big sale........

Bullets are slowly making it to the shelves, some retailers seam to be getting them faster then others. Out of 15 000 that were on back order at various places I have received almost all of them now, My J4 jackets are still on back order as Berger is using all of them to try and meet their demand before offering any to the public, for a while I couldn't get jackets or bullets.....thank god for the emergency staff in the bunker.......

I guess I'm fortunate because I paid exactly the same price that I did last year.
I was expecting an increase since our dollar is worth 10% less than it was a year ago.
Don't get me wrong it's not like Natchezss in the USA which has a 10% off sale on them right now but we're not in the USA.

Seems Barnes, Nosler & Hornady take up a disproportionately greater amount of advertising space - and are frequently shilled by the shooting press.

Sierra has always worked well for me.. good accurate bullets. Not much experience with Speer.
