bullet selection for 300 winmag

those were the ones my 308 ended up liking, and what i was wanting to try for my 300, but sadly no one in my area has them in, and im hesitant to order online as the only place i found them in winnipeg only ships via canada post

I bought them last through cabelas mail order and they give you a choice on shipping, ups or Canada post.

Hornady ELD-X 178 gr or 200 gr

do you have "on game" experience with them?, i`d rather use a proven bullet in something i can actually purchase, and all the retailers ive talked to say they cant get those ELD in stock yet, , speaking of retailers, anyone know of a site sponsor that`s got a decent selection?, i started going through the list last night but young baby at home makes concentrating difficult when she wants to "help"..lol

Another vote for 180 Ballistic tip for practice/fun and switch to Accubond for hunting. Am going to give Matrix bullets a try soon as have been impressed by them in another caliber, and made here.

As others have mentioned you may have to try a few different bullets and work up loads to find a combo the rifle likes. Not sure what you're hunting? If deer only, the 300 is overkill (not a criticism) so you get a bit of forgiveness with bullet construction as long as you keep to 180+ grains. 165's are going fast enough that lighter constructed bullets can cause both epic meat damage and lost critters due to early expansion/insufficient penetration. The ballistic tips are a good example, the 165's have thinner jackets (more suitable to .308 velocities) than the 180's. Might be worth the wait for some Sierra's? You've had success in the past with them, and they are well known for their accuracy potential since you want to stretch your legs a little. I have also used Accubonds with success and was impressed with their terminal performance on the few deer I harvested with them, but I haven't evaluated them for accuracy past 200 yards. Have fun!

there are so many its hard if not impossible to decide where to start many very good suggestions all are possible with the right gun what i found worked in both my 300 wby mag and win mag was the Swift Sirocco 180 30 cal bullets does it all for me from close up to way out there 5-6 years ago took a white tail doe with the 300 wby at 365 yards head shot! One and done they work for ME!

Its pretty hard to screw up a .300 so bad that it wont shoot well enough to make 250 yard shots. That frees you up to base bullet choice entirely on what you want the bullet to do after it gets there. Do you want to be able to shoot through an elk lengthwise? Or do you want to plaster a broadside deer so hard that there's a huge entrance hole with steam rolling out of it? Both are rather easy to arrange, but with different bullets.

I really like using heavier projectiles in the 300 win mag, you really get the full benefit of the cartridge. 215 berger hybrids really stretch out all that you can possibly obtain from a 300 win mag if your rifle/twist rate allows you to do so. Haven't hunted with them yet but i will get back to you the fall. 210 VLDs have worked great. Blood trails kinda sucked but the furthest i have seen a moose/black bear travel after being hit was 25 yards.
If you are dead set against bergers try 200 accubonds. From experience they have worked great on game and have a decent BC. The new accubond LRs and ELD-X bullets are available now at x-reload and might be worth a try also.

Im looking at the berger bullets, I want a lighter load with a 160-185 grain to try out, I have seen the recoil so im alittle nervous lol, new remmy 700 sps in 300 Wm, and I have a 338 Wm too

ok, so latest rifle is a kimber oregon 300 winmag, with a twist rate of 9.5... have all the components to reload but bullets, , looking at 180 gr, as i have a bunch of friends that shoot all types of 300 winmags and they all shoot 180`s, , but curious to what the masses here suggest for bullets..(my buddies are all barnes fanatics.lol),

up to 500 yard shots(very high end of range for me), hunting only, so not interest in match or target rounds, bergers ive heard are better for longer range shots only?, barnes are expensive as all hell and very sporatic in being shipped to local stores, hornday, well, ive never had much luck with reloading rifle rounds with them, but am open to try again,
had great luck with sierra game kings in my 308, sadly they are to light for my 300 or id rob them from my 308 box.lol, any others i`ve missed?,

please keep it to 180`s, possibly 185`s and 300 winmag, well .308 diameter at least, lol,

thanks in advance :)

Barnes are less expensive than Partition.
Premium bullets cost more, but they are least expensive part of hunting trip.
Last year I've shot my 300 Win Mag with 180 gr Barnes TTSX twice... getting two Elk Cows..cost 6$ ...gas to get to Suffield was 100 $
one way.
There is reason why your friends are Barnes Fanatics as you say.

Exactly.

If I wasn't such a dyed-in-the-wool Partition fan I would say to try a TSX, Accubond or Scirocco. But, as Dogleg says, if you want a giant steam-evacuating entrance wound then you might want to consider the Ballistic Tip.
