For all those that think bullpups are Illegal...

They arent.

Add-on stocks are.

Thats right. Just the stock, not the gun. There are plenty of legal bullpup guns in Canada.

Oh wait? What about that Walther G22 rifle, thats prohib right? No

Walther G22 Firearms
Version 3.3 of the FRT indicates that the Walther G22 is a non-restricted firearm with a “Bullpup design”. Please disregard that entry. New information on this firearm reveals that it is currently being manufactured with an actual bull-pup stock, which is listed as a prohibited device in Criminal Code Regulations. This type of stock reduces the overall length of the firearm by placing a substantial part of the reloading action or the magazine well behind the trigger of the firearm when the firearm is held in the normal firing position.

Since individuals cannot possess prohibited devices, they cannot possess this firearm in its current configuration. Businesses may possess it only if they are licensed to possess prohibited devices for an approved purpose.
Affected businesses and individuals will be contacted with information about their options.

But what does the law actually say on bullpups?

2. Any rifle, shotgun or carbine stock of the type known as the "bull-pup" design, being a stock that, when combined with a firearm, reduces the overall length of the firearm such that a substantial part of the reloading action or the magazine-well is located behind the trigger of the firearm when it is held in the normal firing position.

You will also notice this law is found under prohibited devices, not prohibited firearms.

So to recap:

Bullpup stock = bad

Bullpup gun = good

Can anyone identify a non prohib bullpup for me? Which bullpup designs currently or previously available are legal in Canada without a 12(x) status?

i can't remember the exact name but TSE was selling a very expesive tack driver that was nonrestricted. gun was ~$10 000.

the gun I shot yesterday (second time on it for me) is not prohib. It's the one mentioned above, the AMP DSR, without a doubt the single nicest rifle I have ever shot. The trigger is unbelievable. I'd take a hatchet to my Sako TRG-22 if that meant I could get a DSR at a reasonable price. Of course I'd take the muzzle brake off it though.

Scarecrow, I applaud your attempt to enlighten everyone on the bullpup issue, but it has been tried many, many times before.

Countdown to the next time someone says a bullpup is prohib is currently
3 hours 27 minutes.

Maybe sticky this thread?

What about bullpup designs that have no stock at all, i.e. whose stock is integral with the receiver?

BTW, I had to explain 5 round limitation to my kids yesterday: 'It's intent is to let me kill no more than 5 people at a time. After killing 5 I'd have to put another 1/2 of a stripper clip in and kill another 5'. Sounds ridiculous, right? The question from the kids came immediately after they saw how fast loading with a stripper clip can be: press-bzzz-click. As if we all get firearms to immediately start a massacre, which can be prevented by a 5 round limit!

You guys are all so stupid, every one knows all bullpups are prohibited. Imnow because a cop once told me.

He also informed me that AR15's are prohibited, so you guys are all going to jail.

If you were so inclined to go on a killing spree would it not be easier to just unpin the mags and load em up to 30rds? Oh wait that would be illegal...nevermind.

Leave it to the law to punnish the law abiding. What kind of criminal would go into a gunfight with pinned mags?? I just don't understand any of these gun laws....

Thanks for the info. The Walther G-22 may be treated as if it were a non restricted firearm, but it cannot be bought or sold, so I am going to count that one out. The FN FS 2000 looks very interesting, but as I understand it the gun is not yet available. Is it certain that the FS 2000 will not be prohibited? The L-85 (actually the L98A1) bolt gun looks as though it could meet the letter of the law. Have any ever been imported into Canada? Finally, the AMP DSR-1 is the real thing - bullpup design, in Canada and not prohib. By the overall length and barrel length, this rifle should be non restricted. Is it classified as such?

So, we have 1 or 2 bullpup designs which are deemed safe and acceptable for the Canadian public to own. Both are bolt guns, legal semi auto bullpups appear non existent, maybe the FS-2000 will change that. They appear scarce and expensive, but hey, so are double rifles. At least they do exist. Thank you all for the information, I learn something new every day on this site.

I want to make a firearm for the sole purpose of making one that sidesteps every last restriction.

Anyone got a mill? I have some drawings of pump-action pistol calibre bullpup that will accept modified PPSH drum mags.
