Bullseye Target Camera System

Hmmm, wouldn't an iPhone with an app to auto answer FaceTime work equally as well with no additional equipment required?

Yeah. I mentioned a while back in a spotting scope thread that I'd seen a father son pair do this at the range. Two iPhones running Skype and they just set it up and let it run the whole time (45 min ish). They said skype used less data I guess? Had it set up on one of those little folding tripods maybe 5 feet back from the target. Worked pretty slick actually. And as you said, no additional equipment that wouldn't otherwise already be in your pocket, except the little dollar store tripod. They must have had a good data plan though.

Another fella started a thread a while back about planning to take his new Phantom Drone to the range to use in this capacity, and take selfies of him and his buds shooting. He should have wore his flame suit before starting that thread.

Not to cast any doubt on the idea, but you can expect right away that you problem will be lack of zoom and wide angle of view on a phone cam will require you to get it very close and probably under the target so your view will be quite uncomfortable. The resolution on the video feed you'll get will be somewhat way too low to see holes on a large target you require to shoot on a significant distances. Most importantly, after 10 holes or even less you will lose track of what is new hit or where did it go.

But by all means, please try it out and tell us.

This will all be much easier when the 802.11-AY wifi protocol is formalized, up to approx 1000m outdoor range.

tomapleleafss, looking forward to seeing your build.

I wasn't aware there was another wifi incarnation on the cards already but like you say this would make it uber easy

We have both models on order for delivery soon.
I was super impressed with the system when it was demonstrated to me and placed an order right away. Even got one coming for shop use that our gunsmith can use when sighting in rifles

If you could fire me this over in an e-mail I will look at pricing and let you know as soon as I am back in the office on the 3rd.
At home now and cannot check I am afraid

I hear people comment all the time that it's way cheaper to just make one. Has anyone here actually done it? I'd be interested in a parts list of what's needed to build one.

I have the parts for a home made one. Two cell phones with data plans. Place one on a phone cradle near the target, the other at your table. Both phones needs to be set up to skype one another,The one at the target needs to be on the auto answer function in the skype settings. When you make the shot, just skype the target phone and it should show you your target.

I have not actually tried this yet, but i see no reason as to why it wont.

I looked into building my own, but bought the long range unit when the $ was closer in value.

I have the older version, on a tripod with the booster aerial, and it works really well. I estimated that with a whole load of ebay items soldered together it was about 20% cheaper than I was able to purchase the system for, so I bought the system and pleased that I did. The software is excellent too, it even scores the odd fly that lands on the paper!

This has been a game changer for me, the amount of time I use to spend going back to the target, trying to second guess where the shots were placing with a telescope use to really take the shine off a fun day. Now it is fast and much more time is spent shooting. One of the best purchases I have made for a long time.

Candocad.

It could be done with 2 cellphones and skype or facetime but I think the added software that comes with this system is a deal sealer for me. Plus you can get 2 years of insurance for about $30 USD in case it becomes collateral damage in your shooting session. I think it would be hard to explain to the "geek squad" (Best Buy's phone damage insurance carrier) how you got a bullet hole in your Apple I7. Although it would be pretty funny to put a fake bandage on your chest and tell them that you had survived an assassinatioin attempt and your Iphone saved you.

Did anyone actually do 2 cellphones thing more than twice? I kinda really really doubt it.

Could be done and "wow that is neat thing we should do it all the time" are too different things.

Been using one for over a year now and really like it, the software that came with it was the clincher for me. You may be able to get a picture with the phones but that's only half of it. I am no computer programmer and thought why try and reinvent the wheel
