I have been offered a Burris 3-9x long eye relief scope that I would like to mount on a mosin nagant. Will this work on a rifle, or is the eye relief too long ?

Thanks:)

It is a scout mount that I had in mind, I should have said that.

I know some extended eye relief scopes are specially designed for use on rifles, and some on hand guns, what's the difference between them , does anyone know ?

That's what I have on my Savage. Works fine.

There is not that much difference in the specifications between the two lines. A scout scope will usually have low fixed magnification with a slightly better field of view. Also, the eye relief might be less for a scout scope.

I had a handgun scope bought for a project scout rifle but got rid of it because of the magnification (6X). You definitely want low magnificaion for any scout rifle.

My suggestion would be that if you buy a handgun scope for a scout rifle, make sure you try it before buying.

As a starter, I would check out the specifications of both of these lines of scopes by visiting the web sites of Burris, Leupold, etc.

Good luck!

Why is this exactly ?

I am familiar with normaly mounted scopes but LER scopes are something else.

Scout rifles are usually designed for close quarters/relatively short distances and short target sighting time.

You mention that this handgun scope has a 3-9X magnification and IMHO, this is too much for a scout rifle.

On the other hand, if you want to use it on a regular rifle, then we have a different application.

If you're thinking about making your gun a scout rifle, I would highly recommend:

On the other hand, if you just want to put a scope on a typical rifle for normal hunting, shooting, etc, you would be better off using a Burris Fullfield (less costly than the EER HG one)

Duke, The reason I want to fit a LER scope on my rifle is that I don't want to drill and tap it and alter the bolt handle. I need a scope as my eyes are not what they used to be. I'm not bothered about it being a "scout rifle," I just want to be able to shoot it properly.

What concernes me is that with a foreward mounted scope will I still be restricted to low magnification when short target sighting time is not a priority ? I would prefer as high a magnification as possible.

Thanks for the link:)

Please tell me aboiut your scopes, what make and magnification are they ? and model No's etc. Do they return to zero and are the adjustments precise ?

Thanks

Scout scope

Leupold makes a scope specifically for scout applications. The power is 2.5x, as any higher power leads to problems in gaining a fast sight picture. Most LER scopes are focused between 9"-17". I'am waiting for an Amega mount to arrive, then will mount thr 2.5 on a Garand. Will let you know how it works out.

Started with a Bushnell Trophy variable power, but my daughter preferred a BSA 2.5 pistol scope, which is what we have shot the deer with. We have had 0 issues with holding a zero with our 140 grain Remington PSPCL reloads (see pics and story in hunting section).

Hi Spencer
The scope you are planning to put on your mosin rifle might work or might not. It depends on ER you need and what ER that scope has.
I have Weaver Handgun scope on my M44. It has 12-18" ER. The scope installed at 13" with SK mount.
It works fine.;)

I don't know how far you intend to shoot, but my rifle with a Burris 2.75X Scout Scope allows me to shoot well out to a quarter mile. If you can spot the target unaided, shooting it with 2.75X magnification is not difficult. I think your problem is two fold. First you need to determine if the pistol scope will work with 13" of eye relief, and secondly is, if you will have enough field of view, even at the lowest magnification, for the scope to be useful. My guess is that it would be alright at 3X, but would become increasingly difficult to use as power increases.
