Bush Survival guns?

Anyone have one of the Dlask 8.5" barreled 12 gauge 870 Shorty shotguns.

I bought one for my son back in 2008 super cool short bear thumper he packed it when we went into the thick bush after my B&C interior grizzly.

I now have a 12" Dlask 12 gauge barrel on my 870 but take my short 45-70 single shots more often than the far heavier shotgun.

I think you're in grizz country right? I would look at the 300 win mag or 338 win. I think savage and ruger make a small(er) version. Should you need to shoot small game for survival you can eat what's left after the shot. Ideally though if you needed to "survive" you would shoot the biggest thing you could for food.

I got one of the Corwin arms folding single shot 12ga. I recently took my 3 year old and dog for a hike, also known as cougar bait and bear antagonizer. I have never been all that worried about animals but with my little girls, I would rather have something better than a stick with me. I know a single shot may not be ideal, but it is small and light so I am more likely to actually carry it. With a sling you can carry it folded under your arm like you're holding your wife's purse while she tries on shoes;-) I also found that i could pre #### the hamer. It is pretty quick to slip off the sholder, load a shell and close it upready to go.

that little papoose is sweet, I use those same pro mag mags in my 795 great product

My Papoose turned out to be kind of expensive. It runs so well, shoots so well, that it forced me to go out and buy a 795, so that I won't have to handle my POS 10/22 for semi-auto plinking fun.

the dlask 8.5 is nice but carrying it in the woods of BC can give you trouble, the BC hunting regulations considers anything with less than a 12" barrel a hand gun and illegal to use without a wilderness carry permit

Not exactly accurate. You don't need an ATC to carry a non restricted firearm, but BC considers less than 10" barrel a handgun, and handguns aren't legsl for hunting in BC. Or is it 12"? :)

12" iin BC. Try carrying one for "defence" during hunting season and get stopped by a CO. Let me know what happens.

brutus, a good point to make, I have had similar experience with mine, they are the ex caliber 7" rifle set and some leave little to be desired, accuracy is not great with mine either, the one that seems to group best is the 9mm, decent out to 25 yds, the 357 mag and 44 mag in my set is terrible and keyhole like crazy, the shotgun calibres 410 and 20 guage pattern pretty well though

Thank you for that interesting tidbit of info westarm. I have a half finished project 9mm 7" insert for one shotgun, that has yet to be tested.
You have my curiousity up now.

Cheers....

Dependson the predators you expect to meet. Best defense is a clean camp site and avoid animal paths. How many bears did you encounter before. If your children are small enough cats are likely to. Insider them edible. Combo gun if you need to catch. Short 12 gauge if you are strictly defensive.

Short pump shotgun on a three point sling allows full use of your hands yets hangs easy on the neck and can be put into action immediately loaded with double buck shot plus carry birdshot of choice for kettle pot filling...

I just sent a text to my CO buddy asking him for clarification about this I'll post his response when I get it.

For now I'll share I have had no issues in the past and been checked by CO's while in possession of one of these shotgun and yes it was during a hunting season.

I was given a warning for just having it in a case in the vehicle. I even had the old registration certificate for it in the case showing it's status.

The problem is each CO interprets the law differently and you will get different answers.

I am just stating what has happened to me, not what is going to happen every single time.

I have gone to court to prove I am in the right more times than your average person and I can tell you it does very little to educate the party that brought you there. You would think they would be apologetic when it is shown that their case is not a case at all and their interpretation of the law and/or evidence was wrong, but quite the opposite happens, You end up with a embarrassed and vindictive person with a bunch of coworkers and friends looking at you with a microscope for years to come.
