Bush Survival guns?

Like I said, for me bears are the issue. There are plenty here, black and griz. They roam the streets and back yards and I am not gonna take any chances especially when I am out with my kids. That's the only type of survival I worry about.. 22 cal is not much good where I am, not alot of small game or birds around mainly deer, moose and predators of the 4 legged variety. Like you said, not one gun is perfect but pick what suites you. I dont need to go out the bush to have an encounter with something dangerous, I just have to sit out in the back yard.

You might not have to worry about survival if you never leave your back yard, but guns that are suitable for protection from dangerous wildlife are not what the wilderness survival gun is about. Think more along the lines of the gun you want stowed away in a light aircraft, a snowmobile, or a boat, for use in situations where those conveyances stop working as intended. Survival conditions usually occur with little warning. In a pinch a small bore rifle can be used to kill a bear, and if you're already in survival mode, things are already going badly, so who knows what you'll face. That possibility still isn't enough for me to want to carry a 12 ga or a big rifle which all but ensures that I'll run out of ammo before I'm picked up.

I like my Rem 600 in 350 mag 18.5" barrel, no scope 6.5 lbs. the dogleg bolt lays flat for easy packing and it fits sideways across my quad. The hammond gamegetters work great although the 000 buck pellet at 800 fps is a little hard on grouse there is usually enough left to eat. Always pack some salt and pepper with you, if you ever had rabbit roasted on a stick you'll know what I mean.

Since no one has mentioned it yet: a Valmet 412S. Mine is 12G over .308 and I have 12g x 12G OU barrel with interchangeable chokes as well. 12G with birdshot for small game, .308 for larger game/longer distance and 12G slugs followed by a .308 for the nasty critters.

I met up with my CO buddy and another CO this afternoon there were also 2 other CO's present but they did not contribute to the conversation we talked about the 8.5" barreled Dlask Arms Rem 870 shotgun.

They had absolutely no issues with anyone packing this shotgun at any time during the year be it a hunting season or not they also both emphatically stated that they would not have an issue if it was used to hunt with.

I brought up the min 12" barrel restriction for hunting they both stated that there is nowhere in the regs (they even pulled out the regs and went thru it) that states the barrel length has to be a certain length just that it has to be manufactured to that length not shortened and the OAL has to be over 26".

look at the BC hunting regulations, page 3 of the definitions at "handgun" then look at page 17 under legal hunting methods which states "No person shall hunt wildlife with a handgun"

It appears as though not every CO knows the regulations written or how to find them either.......

Handgun – is a firearm that is designed,
altered or intended to be aimed and fired by
the action of one hand or that has a barrel less
than 305 mm (12 in.) in length.

Did you show your buddy where the information is in the regulations?

I'm interested to know how a Conservation officer can do his job when he does not know the regulations he is enforcing

I have a specific need for a firearm that matches some of the OPs criteria, although not the survival (per se) aspect. It can only be satisfied by a combination gun. I require a 20g over 257roberts/6.5swede or thereabouts, but an aggressive black bear is not the same beast as a grizzly. 12g over 270/280/30-06 for two barrels of bear stopping, and with a selection of shells, bird dropping.

Rossi 410 single shot, cheap lite. shot and slugs available. Just keep it well oiled. And don't shoot a big bear with it unless it is on top of you LOL. It weighs less than 3lbs. It makes a good bear banger and excellent for grouse.
