Butler Creek 10/22 barrel problems

I have a target model 10/22. A fine accurate rifle, fun to shoot, a bit finicky about ammo (doesn't like my favourite .22lr round... Rem subsonic) but not a joy to carry around. To make it more of a woods rifle, I reshaped and refinished the laminated wood stock and replaced the barrel with a Butler Creek carbon fibre barrel. Still nicely accurate, feels like a wand in your hands, with the balance between yours hands but, plagued with extraction problems :bangHead: This barrel and the factory target barrel both have tight match chambers which don't always feed well and must be kept clean. With the BC barrel the rifle often fails to extract a live round while unloading, sometimes fails to eject as well. The directions with the barrel said to be sure the extractor wasn't binding, but once you tighten the dovetail barrel block, it goes where it wants. So I widened the extractor groove and I have reshaped the extractor to a sharper hook. Still not right. Any suggestions? I know you can buy after market parts, but can I make what I have work?

This barrel... tight match chambers...often fails to extract a live round...

Are you using match ammo?

If you are not using match ammo then that is probably the reason for the malfunctions. A match chamber is built to different specs and not intended for plinking or non-match ammo.

Both barrels have match chambers, Ruger barrel doesn't have same problem with extractor.

Ruger has a "Target" model, but I believe it to have a standard chamber.

Are you using match ammo?

I'm just trying to help diagnose the problem.

In lieu of additional info...replicate the chamber, breech and extractor cuts and dimensions so that they are the same as the Ruger's, the problem should cease.

Lodi,
I think the Ruger barrel and the BC barrel have a semi-target (Metz or Gentz or something like that is the name of the design) chamber. You are right, a full-on match chamber wouldn't work in a semi-auto. I have tried to do what you suggest, making everything the same. I have also thought about polishing the chamber in the BC barrel in case there is a burr or other roughness there. Do you know how to do this?
Thanks for help!

Failing to extract a live round. It might not be the barrel, maybe check the bolt face to extractor relationship. If the bolt is closing on a live round, but the extractor isn't grabbing the rim properly then you would have this problem. Out of curiousity, if you point the rifle in a safe direction, then fire does the round extract properly?

Yes it does. Does that change your diagnosis? That is what made me wonder about chamber roughness.

No, I still think it is the bolt to barrel relationship (head spacing). What I think is happening is the rim of the cartridge is thicker than the space it fits into on the bolt when the bolt is flush against the barrel. This is keeping the exatractor from grabbing your live rounds and pulling them out. When you fire the gun, the chamber pressure is forcing the round back against the bolt with more force. Now, even after it fires, the extractor may still not be grabbing the cartridge. It could be just the pressure is forcing it back and the bolt is guiding it into the ejector (the pointy metal thing that sticks out the front of your trigger group), which throws it out to the side. If it was mine, I'd check to make sure that the bolt face is sitting flush with the barrel. it's quite possible that the bolt face or the barrel has been machined a little crooked and it's not sitting flat in relation to the barrel. This would allow the the extractor to not positively engage the rim. Hope this helps. ;)

On a side note, if you get pissed off enoungh and want to get rid of that barrel, I'd be interested in buying it from you. I have a 10/22 converted to .22wmr with one and it's like lifting a feather. :D

Courtntan,
Thanks for the PM (I just happened to be logged in) and thanks for the further info and tips. I will definitely check that out. And I will keep your offer in mind :D , it would make a lousy dog tie-out anyway.

No problem. I noticed in my first post I said bolt to extractor, but I meant bolt to barrel. I hope the second post cleared up what I was thinking.

iv had the same problem since i put on the 920 barrel.but mine feeds it good just wont extract.mine feeds it good and i was told to put a vq extractor in it and this should work but i havent done that yet.So if you have any other ideas what i could try id be intrested to hear from you.cause wen the gun jams all the time it isnt fun anymore lol
