So I am going on my first deer hunt tommorow. I got my youtube video and rubber gloves. I was wondering you think I should use the Butt Out (I can go buy one tommorrow)?

Is it a worthwhile thing to get for somebody who lacks experience? So I would use the Butt out first, then tie it off. Then proceed to the carefully gut it, then use a small saw and open up chest cavity and cut the diaphragm area and seperate upper trachea area? Then pull out gut pile in one continuous mass?

Does this sound about right? If I do this I dont need to split the pelvis do I?

My buddy I am going with hasnt done a deer either. So its up to me to do it all. Any tips here?

Thanks

No need to cut the breast bone in the field.I never used butt out ,just use a sharp knife,Slide the knife around the anus carefully you will be amazed at how much room is actually in the pelvis.Remove the ##### and carefully cut the hide towards the chest while guiding your knife between two fingers,The two fingers are used to push the stomach away from the knife point,Once opened to the lower chest slide your hand over the stomach and cut along the backbone to separate the stomach,You should now be able to roll the stomach out onto the ground,Next cut the diaphragm opening the chest cavity, reach up into the neck area and cut the windpipe and pull ,everything should fall out.

Seems way easier actually doing it then it is explaining it lol.

Enjoy your hunt and be safe

^^^???

I've got one in my kit, one used it once though. I bought mine after I saw a buddy of mine using the one he has. It works pretty slick, but not a "must have". I got to admit I was a little apprehensive about using it though, it just doesn't seem right to jam something shaped like that into an animal's "lower intestine" - dead or not - and yank it out for a knot :puke:.

Almost.....you should always cut *with* the direction of hair growth to minimize cut hairs in the meat. Start your skin cut over the breastbone and work down.

Also: remove the windpipe, and if it's a doe remove the udder.

As far as the butt-out? I have one and quite like it. Insert, twist, pull, cut, tie, continue dressing.

Butt Outs work great.... but you are a grown up and if you haven't had your fingers in a bum by now its time to start! :p
I cut the breastbone when the deer is hanging. Less cutting in the field = less dirt/leaves/fur to pick later.

You don't need a saw to split the chest open, just go a little off center where the ribs join to the sternum and you can do it with a quick 2 handed jerk with you knife for each rib. There is a soft spot on either side of the sternum and opening the chest makes life a lot easier. Split the neck open from the chest to as close to the head as you want to, cut the trachea and use that as a handle to pull everything else out from front to back.
Hope that helps a little.

Carving out the arsehole of a deer is frustrating and tedious and no fun at all. If you've ever made the mistake of puncturing the stomach during the gutting the process, it's even less fun. Having used the Butt Out on 4 deer last year, I can honestly say that it's a great tool.
Insert, two full turns, pull, done.

Just follow the instructions on the package and you're good. For $10, it's an easy purchase to make.

Ok, a couple of questions.

If I get the butt out, I stick it in and use as directed.

Then step 2 is I carefully cut in the gut area, pulling up abit on the skin, so as not to puncture the gut and then stick finger in, seperate abit of skin from gut and then with blade between two fingers carefully cut up to sternum area? Does that sound right so far?

Then I either saw, or carefully cut through ribs of entire rib cage. At this point I then reach up and into to cavity and grab the trachea and pull it down and cut it as far up the throat as possible? I have heard mixed things about needing to cut open neck area to do this, some say do it, others say dont do it? Whats best?

At this point with the trachea free, I pull it back and carefully trim any connective tissue around diaphragm area. Now do I use hand and knife and go underneath stomach area (ie near spine area?) and carefully seperate it so that when I pull out trachea, lungs and guts and heart and stuff all get pulled down towards rear and discarded away from animal?

The tied off butt comes out at this point to? I am abit confused about this part, is there attachment in the rear, if you have used butt tool and pulled out 10-12 inch section and tied off? Or does it just come out attached to whole pile?

Also I am abit confused about removing animals business bits, do I only remove on a male and do not disturb the area on a female if already tied off?

Thanks guys, damn why couldnt they teach this #### in hunters ed!!

I have done lots of small stuff and birds but nothing big yet.

Close. As I posted above, I never cut "up" the deer....always down. Your knife (and butcher) will thank you.

Honestly, since you leave tomorrow..... at this point, your best bet is YouTube....there are a bunch of how-to vids there that you can watch.

Yeah I have been watching the vids, they are all somewhat different, plus the people posting after them are all arguing over what is right and wrong... Very few seem to do it all the same. Or the guy sets up the camera so you like get a great view of the tree and the back of his head while hes doing it...course its windy and he mumbles and talks into the deer while working..

There were some good ones, but they used hangers and did it like that, I will have to do it on the ground as I dont have a hanger yet. Apologies for the basic questions.

I have done it this way and its pretty slick, having a buddy to slice away at the connecting tissue as you pull back on the windpipe helps prevent tearing and breaking. Every thing should follow the windpipe if you don't get to carried away.

This mostly works with smaller deer. A small year and a half old can be done with one hand. A older big bucks chest is nearly impossible to split open with a knife by hand.

USP.

I used the butt out on the first few deer I cleaned (until i accidently ran over it with the truck) It works great.

Heres what I find the most simple way to field dress a deer.

#1. Use the butt out tool, tie it off then cut the butt out tool free.
#2. cut off the #### and balls (keep them if your regs require... if not just keep the balls as they are great sliced up and pan fried in curry powder)
#3. use a knife with a gut hook

or pick up somthing like this:

you can get them at any sporing goods store (walmart has them cheap)
#4. at the brestbone, pinch and pull up on the skin and make a small nick with the blade of your knife.
#5. insert the gut hook into that knick, stand over the deer from the back legs and pull all the way down to the pelvic bone. This will expose the membrane keeping all the guts in.
#6. use the tip of your knife and poke a small hole just below the end of the brestbone. again insert your gut hook and pull all the way down. (the blunt end off the gut hook will keep everything out of the way.
#7. roll animal onto its side (this will make the stomach and most of the other stuff shift over and out the animal.
#8. reach in and cut a slit in the diaphram big enough to let you get both hands inside the chest. reach in as far as you can and cut the windpipe above the lungs and heart (its good practice to put your index finger along the topside of your knife right at the tip so you dont cut yourself)
#9. grab the windpipe and pull it free of the chest cavity. cut along the spine to free up the stomach if things get hung up.
#10. use your hand to "scoop" everything free from the cavity and pull out the lower intestine that you had tied off. your done!

Pan fried deer balls??? really???

they taste like what ever you cook them in... they absorb those flavors. has a texture sort of like imitation crab meat

thanks Qhergt, although I think I might pass on eating its nuts :p

I was planning on frying the heart up with some onions maybe.
