Butt outs? Worth buying or not?

thanks Qhergt, although I think I might pass on eating its nuts :p

I was planning on frying the heart up with some onions maybe.

USP if you get one, you gotta !!!! Fried heart and onions = deliciousness !!!

The tips on gutting are all good, it's really fairly simple just remember to take your time with it....Until you get the hang of it, the slower the better.. The tip about cutting with the hair is the number one tip I could give... Good luck to you, hope you knock one down..

Heart is great..

slice of raw liver with a bit of salt is great as well. Its also great fried with onions and bacon.

When me and my buddies hunt, we try use just about the entire animal.

neck meat, although tough, marinated and slow cooked is good, same with the facial meat.

Doe breasts are quite tender and tasty as well when chopped up and pan fried.

Boiling down the skull, other bones, feet ect to extract the marrow. and the fat skimmed off, and stored in the fridge is great for adding to soups, or for using as a "balm" for stiff joints and achy muscles.

The Stomach you can clean out and cook as you would beef tripe.

Kidneys, cook them like you would beef or pork kidney

Lungs are good as well, just trim off all the bronchial tubes and use a meat tenderizer to beat the lungs down to get the air out of them. chop them up and pan fry or what ever.

Intestines, clean and rince them out and use as sausage casings. Or soak them in water and vinegar as you would prepping beef tripe. boil them and pan fry and add to your sturfries

Bladders can be cleaned and cooked up as well as the pancreas.

Marinade and slow cook the tongue as well.

the brain can be soaked, then boiled, then cut up and pan fried.

eyes can either be eaten raw, or boiled.

Tail can be boiled and added to a soup.

If you really feel brave boil the #####, cut it up and add to a soup.

The hide can be easily and naturally tanned at home (lots of info online)

Although, I am pondering boiling a small section of hide to remove the hair and fat, and then deep fry it. I think it may end up being like crispy chicken skin..

Bones can be ground down and used as fertilizer for your garden.

The contents of the stomach and intestines can be used as fertilizer as well.

I encourage all of you the next time you kill an animal to think about trying a part (or a few) of it you haven't tried before.

There is so much of the animal that can be eaten or used then just besides the meat.

^with the increase in CWD are you abit worried about eating brains from deers?

I dont mind some organ meat, but some things such as brains, liver and intestines Ill pass. I eat these occasionally for cows, but not so much anymore either.

I am, which is why i dont eat them... my Iranian hunting buddy does though... But hes crazy to begin with so I cant really tell if it has effected him yet or not

I guess if he goes "downer" on you while out in the bush..you know it was one brainpie to many :p

You just can't wait to shove that thing up somethings ass can you?:p

I would also like to add that if your shot is into the shoulder, you need to cut away the damaged tissue or it will be bloodshot and spoil more meat. Good luck!

rather intimidating looking is it not?

oh, and if you go to use it on a doe in the dark....make sure you stick it in the right hole

I picked up a butt out a few years ago when they first came out more as a joke, and let me tell you there was some serious laughing going on when the guys seen me jam that thing up the deers arse, but let me say that after 25yrs of deer hunting this is the easiest way to do the job. Though I still hear a giggle when I take it out to use it, but now all the guys want to use it when it's there turn to gut a deer.

Yep my bud showed me how Butt-Out works last yr.
I have one in my pack this yr!
I always slice right up the breastbone, makes it easier to pull out windpipe etc with-out blood all up your arms.
Used to use a folding saw for the job but if you use the right knife it will go right up the breastbone, even on a big buck, done a 235lber 2yrs ago.
I use a Russel, it ain't big but it is effective, not all knives will do it thou, had a buck that never would, I bought a bud a Grohamm?(spelling) & it will do it too.

same here....although a throat cut will let you pull out the windpipe easier and will get more than you can get by reaching in and cutting.

don't over think it. The reason there are so many different opinions is that there are lots of ways to get the job done. Everyone has their preference. Once you fumble through the first one, you will have it down.

Yup don't over think it, just know what you need to accomplish then get it done.
My first deer my wife's uncle talked me through, I had never even seen it done before, then the next year I was doing it myself with no one around.

You will pick up tips to do a better job as you go, take them or leave them

X2... Just open it up and get the insides out. Preferably without puncturing anything... And if u do, rince the area with water and pat dry with a paper towel. Its like gutting a fish..

I must say, I tried a butt-out on a bear and it didn't work to well... It tore everything up while I tried to pull it out. Deer, I had no problem with... Even had other hunters laugh when I brought the thing out... But for some reason, when they downed a deer they always ask me for it.

It's just one more thing to carry around, and unnecessary. I can field dress an entire deer with nothing more than a good fixed-blade knife (a folder works too, but I prefer a 4-5" fixed blade). No need for any saws, hatchets, gut hooks, butt-outs, or any of the other stuff that just ends up cluttering your pack.

oh I wish I was along for your first deer..... :D

nothing I like better then watching a first timer gutting. :D

you'll get better after the first few.

and after a few dozen you'll have it down pat... then its time to gut a moose... solo :D

I agree, but a small hatchet is nice to have ;)

Funny first timer gutting story.

We where on what was a doe cull in SW Alberta about 10 yrs ago. One of the groups was a 20 something on his first deer hunt with a borrowed .303. He shot his doe in the south end headed north and them in the neck. When he asked for advice I have him some, as well as his buddies, and suggested he not bother messing around with the south end of the deer as he had made her arsehole into a bowling alley. Anyway his buddies differed and the guy listened to his friends. As the the guy was using his knife to search for the missing arsehole he was talking away as he hit something under pressure in the cavity with his knife. I personally watched the green stream spray from the deers orifice into the dudes mouth mid sentence. His gagging and puking and hacking was unbelievably funny, and he couldn't finish cleaning his deer.
Im laughing right now.

I did a deer that was 220 on the hook at the meat cutters (no head or hide) the other year with an old buck 119. Pop pop pop. Go around the side of the breastbone not the center.
