Another vote for 270 based on the caliber restrictions in southern Ontario, assuming you don't already have a varmint rifle. If you already have a varmint rifle I'd probably go 7mm Rem mag out of those choices. If you don't have a varmint rifle and you really want a magnum there is always 270WSM.

The .270 is a good choice, however, I like my 7mm Rem Mags better. A little more versatile, especially when going after bigger stuff like moose. However, I don't have the restrictions southern Ontario has so....best bet is to try and find gunNutz here to take you to the range and try out each caliber you're interested in. Pick the one you're most comfortable firing. A lot of guys go out and buy the biggest magnum they can find, shoot a box of ammo through it, beat the hell out of their shoulder, develop one heckuva flinch and then sell the rifle a week later for $200-$300 Less than what they paid for it....don't get me wrong, I just LOVE those deals! However, keep in mind Magnum doesn't make you a better shooter or hunter. Putting the bullet where it counts is far more important than foot-pounds of muzzle energy when it comes to killing an animal.

I went with the 7mm rem mag.... shot it today ... (2 boxes of 150 rem core lokt)
Decent Recoil but nothing crazy ( im used to Sabot slugs out of a Rifled choke tube ..MUCH MORE PUNCH than my new rifle.. )

Had a little getting used to since the scope was a tad back and nailed me good a couple times .... Managed 1.5 -2 inch group at 100 and at 200 i was within about 3.5 inches at 200...... Not bad since I have NEVER fired anything other than a 3030 ( like 5 times )or my shotgun....

My vote is for the WSM, but I have this terrible habit of over doing it.

I have to agree with the others, for what and where your hunting, the .270 is probably ok. Maybe the 7mm if your gonna travel around.

I was pondering the exact same question a week ago when I was shopping for a new rifle. I ended up getting a remy 7400 in 270. I used to use a Browning .308 but due to circumstances in my life I had to sell it. Im happy with my new rifle and happy with the 270. It's a very polite round and from my understanding will drop almost anything here in Ontario including moose. Ammo is reasonable to.
