Buying a restricted online

I called the CFO today asking them about buying a glock 22 from my friend. She told me that the transfer of the firearm from his name to mine could take 5-10 days and after that I will be issued a temp att to transfer the firearm from his house to my house after they get my club on file.

not to sure...so do i need to join a club if im not buying from a store?

In SK (and AB I believe) they ask for a copy of your range membership for your first restricted purchase.

This isnt true for me. I bought mine form the EE and when I completed the transfer there was no talk about a membership. Cp tried to deliver but I wasnt home so had to call the cfo and get a statt to take it home that is when the cfo asked for a membership. If i was home to accept delivery then nothing was needed. I was however a member at a range by then so they emailed me my statt and a temp ltatt until the ltatt came in the mail.

Member first, Law 9, restricted (when they have wasted 2 months of your membership or longer)

Should be 1 law for all Canada and ALL provinces should be made to follow it.

Plus the range told me that if you let your membership expire the CFO will take away your restricted license and confiscate your guns. Reason being, is that you got your restricted for target shooting, and if you don't target shoot you don't need the the firearm.
WTF is that?

Hmmm sounds like the range is trying to ensure you spend your money on a membership? :ar15:

I was told the same, you have to belong to a club, the club i am at told me its best to get multiple memberships at different clubs at different times to ensure you dont expire your law 9, if you do let your law 9 expire by not being a member of a club then they can take away your firearms as your not using it for target shooting.

This may not be the case anywhere else but this is quebec and they can get away with almost anything.

Well as a dealer in Ontario, I sell numerous handguns per week and ship all over Canada. during the registration I am asked 100 percent of the time what the purpose of the restricted firearm is for. You must belong to a gun club somewhere, or be a bonafide collector who has filled out the deep stack of paperwork for collector status. Approval will not be given if you don't qualify for one of the reasons.

Every handgun I've purchased and that is many, the seller regardless of store has asked for my club name and at least 90% of the time I have received said registration slip before the mail person delivered the gun here in BC.
A few purchases have been from a store where a Wes works and I must say I couldn't be happier.... ;)

Hmmm...the bulls**t keeps getting deeper and deeper. When I purchased my revolver, I needed to have already belonged to a gun club. You see, this was to expedite getting my att. I gave them the required information. The nice CFO faxed a copy of my approved att to the store within a day or two (I dunno, can't remember exactly).

I was now the proud owner of my first revolver AND I could go out to any range in Alberta that I was a member of. In my case, the CFO explained to me that this would be the better route to go instead of having to get a permit to take from store at time of purchase and wait to apply for my att later.

This same process was followed again. Visa card over the phone, faxed in info to the store, att, pick up my new pistol and then out the range.

I have bought 5 restricted handguns in the last 6 months without belonging to a range. I live in Ontario and all they need to know is that you are a target shooter not what club you belong to. I have bought them all from a licensed store and never had any issue with the transfer. I still dont belong to a range and I am not classified as a collector. I am intending on joining one but just waiting for them to hold their safety course so I can join.

Ask the CFO for a clearly written letter identifying the regulation that requires you belong to a club before they will issue you an Att. They won't do it as it is not in the regulations. You do not have to belong to a club to own a restricted or to transport a restricted from the seller to your house. Please guys stop making up laws or regulations that do not exist.

I'm at a loss to understand all of the misconceptions??? This is RESTRICTED. You need to belong to a club, in process of membership or declare yourself a collector.
1st question will be: why? Target or Collecting?.....A: Target. 2nd question: which club?

I have been told that declaring yourself as a collector COULD bring the police around to investigate as to how this "collection" is being stored. The inference is that if you have no constructive reason for owning pistols or the like the Police are more apt to harass you into "compliance"....i.e. guns are not intended for home defence.

I understand now, thanks to all the great responses, but I still think it's crazy. What about DAY PASSES?? now i gotta sink more money into it
(on the upside I'll probably go to the range more with a full membership and increase my love of guns even more) Thanks CFC!

I'll be in this boat soon too, and with a busy life I doubt I'll see more than 10 range visits a year (40 minutes each way to Silverdale, which is where I've always gone). It doesn't make sense for me to buy a membership.

I don't see the CFO having an issue with the standard answers of "Target shooting", and if they ask what range, it's "Day passes at Silverdale. I don't shoot often, not worth buying memberships".

Guess we'll see.

I will say it again. I live in ONTARIO and I have purchased 5 handguns in the last 6 months without belonging to a range. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BELONG TO A RANGE TO BUY A HANDGUN IN ONTARIO. The store just puts down that you are a TARGET SHOOTER and the transfer will be approved. I am anxiously waiting for the range to hold their safety course so I can join and get my LTATT to shoot my handguns.

Yes x 10,000

I'm going with this. Sounds like another sticky (pinned?) thread needed; Did you need to join a club to buy your restricteds?"

No, I still do not belong to a club. I am waiting for some of the clubs around here to offer their safety course so I can join. Could we make owning and shooting a restricted handgun any more inconvenient. I just want to join a range and shoot my handguns. Anyway to answer your question, you do not need to belong to a club to buy a restricted in Ontario.
