Buying first restricted handgun ONTARIO

Hey guys,

I joined the forum yesterday and made a post in the hunting rifle section. I got some really good feed back so I'm here looking for your guys help.

I moved to ontario a little while ago, I took my restricted gun course while I was going back and forth working before I actually moved up here. I passed and have had my RPAL card for sometime now. I now have the funds saved up to buy. So I was smart and already read the ontario process in the foru, the TATT and the ATT. My question is, I live in waterloo ON, does anyone know of a good club to join around here? And what are your guys thoughts on the remington R1 stainless?
 
Looks like a nice piece but my two cents (keep in mind I'm still pretty new to the pistol side of things) I'd start with a .22 I fell in love with the CZ shadowline but was talked into a buckmark .22 instead. This was great because it's cheap to shoot and has allowed me to get better with handling and shooting a pistol. Now it's time for me to purchase my CZ
 
As for clubs, there is Colby in Waterloo (near Conestoga Mall), Galt Sportsmen's Club has very good facilities but it is pretty expensive. There is Urban Tactical in Brantford. With a bit of a drive, there is East Elgin Sportsmens' Association (EESA) just outside of Aylmer.

I live in the "Tri-Cities" area, and I belong to EESA. It is a little over an hour drive, but I really like the club.

Hmm interesting thank you, I never really thought of that. A .45 may not be the best choice to start off with
 
my best advice would be to find a range that rents guns and try a few. The Remington r1 seems decent enough for the price from what I've read, but 1911's aren't for everyone. Also keep in mind shooting .45 regularly can add up quickly, if money is at all a factor I would look more towards 9mm. For first centre fire handgun I would probably look at a glock 17 or a 9mm 1911.
 
Interesting thank you I will definitely take that into consideration, sense you said 9mm 1911, do you know any in particular you would suggest? I don't like the glocks, no offense to anyone that owns one. I just like 1911's I have had the chance to hold a few and check them out.

What's your budget? Theirs a very large price spectrum when your looking at 1911's. You could spend anywhere from 500 to over 5000.On the lower priced end allot of people seem to like the SAM 1911's. Middle of the road would probably be a kimber or Springfield. I've tried a 9mm kimber target II and it was pretty decent.

Thank you, budget would be 800 taxes in, looking for a used gun I believe as it is my first handgun, I like rifles but I'm unsure about how much I'll use my handgun.

if your stuck on the 1911 platform try looking at the gsg 1911 in 22lr..ammo won't cost much and will get you to the range to tune your skills then the fun starts
I have been to Urban Tactical and the staff are amazing
take alook at norinco's and sam's and even Girsan lower end but mine have gone bang everytime...save on the gun and buy more ammo canada ammo may have deals coming next week

Go to Shooters Choice to handle handguns that they have in stock and decide what feels good in your hand.
 
If this is your first pistol, start with a .22cal. WAY too many folks start with a .45, and learn a lot of bad habits.
Once you've got your technique down, then move up the calibers.

PLUS, unless you are VERY well off, training with a .45 will be quite expensive.

Try the M&P22, or the GSG 1911-22. Or the S&W 617 if you like revolvers.

If you MUST have a full size 1911, go with the Para 1911 in 9mm. It's moderately price, decent quality, and in 9mm.
 
If you see a deal you like boxing week dont be afraid to buy... In Ontario you can buy without being in a club.

Handle a few revolvers too, I was dead set on buying a 1911 for years but after handling a smith and Wesson 586 during the course the 1911 fell by the wayside and a 686 was all I wanted. My favourite remains my S&W 617 w/ the 686 following in close second. I rarely even touch my semi autos.
 
Another vote for EESA, should have all you need for ranges. Not too far from Waterloo, found Colby range a bit too busy and very tight quarters. Not enough room to swing a cat..... So to speak.
 
You should buy the gun you're interested in. That's why you're here, isn't it? Having a gun that you want to shoot, and having fun while shooting is what will get you to the range.

A lot of people will say you should start with a .22 of some sort. And sure, the ammo's cheap. But what myself and a lot of friends have found is that .22s aren't exciting. The guns are typically small and made of what feels like potmetal. The recoil is anemic and they're not particularly accurate.

For about the same amount of money you can get 200 9mm or 150 .45acp rounds you really enjoy shooting, or 500 .22lr rounds that maybe feel like a chore. I know what I'd choose.
 
I recommend colby gun cub. It's a good facility and has both a gun and bow store inside. Wolverine stands behind their products so I recommend a sam 1911 9mm from them or the gsg in .22 is another good option
 
.45 gets pretty expensive if you shoot often, or even not so often.
Just for costs alone I would consider 9mm, or .22 if you're super-cheap like me.
 
Guys, your awesome I just left Colby store, held a gsg 1911 22. I might look into the 9mm. I do apprichieate all the information you guys provided me.. only one thing, Colby Dr is 305.00 per year.. is there anywhere with a slightly lower yearly fee? Or is that pretty standard up here. Thanks again guys... your all very helpful in my decision.
