I'm looking to buy a scope, and I noticed that if I buy from a US store cheaper than here (including currency exchange and import tax).

The US website (optics planet) says "This item may be regulated for export by the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Department of Commerce. Please see our Export Policy prior to placing your order."

I can get it shipped to the US and pick it up myself, but I don't want to run in to any issues when crossing the border.

They have chat support (optics planet), but when I asked the lady said that she couldn't not answer that question, that what I have to do is buy it, write in the notes that I want to bring it here, and then their special department will determine if its ok or not.

If it was like $20 difference, not worth the hassle, but is around $170.

Any suggestions? anyone here purchased optics from the US?

Bought my Delta Point out of the US. Follow the rules from both sides, no problem. Free service from Canadian Gov't. At the exchange rate, is it worth it?

Not worth the risk. State Department will flag you. CBSA will flag you. You are importing without an export permit which the USA takes HUGE exception to. I believe setting up an export permit for yourself if you are hell bent on it is a few hundred bucks.

Correct but that is what I said. He will need an export permit. One is ITAR (State Department) and One is DoC. Both can issue you a travel ban and/or fine if you are caught trying to bring it in without the proper paperwork.
Only scopes made to military specifications require an export license.... Other optics can be exported under the authority of the dept of commerce

Having said that, good luck trying to figure out what scopes fall under what rules.... Its not exactly like they have stamps on them

One time end user, non commercial, as in private citizen, the import permit is free from the CDN Gov't. A lot of the US suppliers can't be bothered doing the extra involved. I purchased through Webyshops in Texas they were very helpful with the process.

I think I will be buying here in Canada.
Yes is going to cost more, but is less hassle and better for local buisnessess. I've received great service from my local store, and also online stores from BC and ONT.
